New Toy (pics)
« on: 31 Dec 2011, 06:28 pm »
I picked this up off craigslist. Original owner in good condition. It will keep me busy for a while. I want to tweak it a bit.
Any Idea which AT is mounted on it? I dont want to pull it yet.

Nice catch! I believe the cart is an AT13e or a variant. (AT would alter the model #s slightly so big retailers would not have price match back then.) Nude square shank eliptical .2 x .7, IIRC, nice cartidge.

It actually sounds real good. I put a poor condition record on and just fired it up. WOW, so I put a nicer one on. Then another. I really like it.
Wayne, I will give you a ring next time I am down south.

The black box sitting by itself is the power supply for the Audible Illusions preamp.

Nice Catch  :thumb:

A classic and very capable deck - worthy of a decent cart.

Oh OK, your input is not very positive. Very shallow as a matter of fact.

Have you ever listened to the song "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You"? It is one of the best songs she has ever done.

This song was written as a tribute to Joe Walsh of the Eagles. In the liner notes of her TimeSpace album, Stevie explained:
"I guess in a very few rare cases, some people find someone that they fall in love with the very first time they see them... from across the room, from a million miles away. Some people call it love at first sight, and of course, I never believed in that until that night I walked into a party after a gig at the hotel, and from across the room, without my glasses, I saw this man and I walked straight to him. He held out his hands to me, and I walked straight into them. I remember thinking, I can never be far from this person again... he is my soul. He seemed to be in a lot of pain, though hid it well. But finally, a few days later, (we were in Denver), he rented a jeep and drove me up into the snow covered hills of Colorado... for about 2 hours. He wouldn't tell me where we were going, but he did tell me a story of a little daughter that he had lost. To Joe, she was much more than a child. She was three and a half, and she could relate to him.

I guess I had been complaining about a lot of things going on on the road, and he decided to make me aware of how unimportant my problems were if they were compared to worse sorrows. So he told me that he had taken his little girl to this magic park whenever he could, and the only thing she EVER complained about was that she was too little to reach up to the drinking fountain. As we drove up to this beautiful park, (it was snowing a little bit), he came around to open my door and help me down, and when I looked up, I saw the park... his baby's park, and I burst into tears saying, 'You built a drinking fountain here for her, didn't you?' I was right, under a huge beautiful hanging tree, was a tiny silver drinking fountain. I left Joe to get to it, and on it, it said, dedicated to HER and all the others who were too small to get a drink.

So he wrote a song for her, and I wrote a song for him... 'This is your song, ' I said to the people, but it was Joe's song. Thank you, Joe, for the most committed song I ever wrote. But more than that, thank you for inspiring me in so may ways. Nothing in my life ever seems as dark anymore, since we took that drive.

I have the same lps which I bought years ago, I listened to it once, and I hated it.

I do repect your musical taste and your right to dig this lps, but please allow me the same. We don't have to like or dislike the same lps, that's what makes this hobby great. Even joshK agrees with me.

Its not a high quality recording by any means.

TONEPUB,
I picked it up for $200. It is worth that to me. I am very suprised how nice it really sounds. One thing I am not used too, the slightest bump and the plater is bouncing like crazy.

Comment on the audio rack which holds the TT (O.T.)
Hi.
.. It will keep me busy for a while. I want to tweak it a bit.
Please take my comment as constructive, not offensive. What I see on the glass rack is the last thing I would do for my equipment.

IMO, never never place any equipment on glass panes. FYI, the resonance frequency of a wine glass ($6) is about 800HZ!!!! Though I don't worry too much too high volume from yr loudspeakers can shatter the glass panes in yr rack, this very low resonance frequency does affect the music harmonics reproduced.

Besides, the VTL tube power amps are quite heavy for the glass panes to support without vibrations.

Likewise, for the TT which demands rigid & heavy-weight support. Surely, not on a piece piece of thin glass pane.

Let me tell you how I worked on my audio rack. All my light-weight equipment, e.g. CD/DVD-auido players, SS &  tube phono-preamps are placed on a solid hardwood rack I DIYed. No glass at all.

My tube power amp is 'floated' on a 3" thick massy natural granite block, which is 'floated' on the fully carpetted concrete floor. Just underneath the hardwood rack.

MY TT is 'floated' on its own discrete 100lb massy platform which I DIYed using 2 hollow concrete blocks. I do NOT allow my TT, being a rotating drive, placed with other stationary components to eliminate any undue vibrations & resonances. I just borrowed the idea of the USD73,750 Rockport Technologies
System III Sirius TT with its 185lb integrated platform!!.

thanks for the post on that song , very interesting as I was a big fan of Joe's music . I have the same table and it has served me well and can take a lot of cartridges . The best mod I did was remove the Thorens plate on the head shell and get rid of the hardware inside . This allows you to mount your carts from the top with normal sized bolts . So much easier to work with that way . You can always replace the cover after install if you want but it is only a cosmetic thing . Alignment is much easier adjusting the screws from the top .
