Tube noobe question...
« on: 31 Dec 2011, 04:07 am »
I have a Dodd tube buffer in my Virtue Sensation and have been thinking about different tubes.  In another thread there seemed to be a general consensus that the Sylvania Gold Brand 5751 would be an excellent choice for this amp.  But then I see there's a Sylvania JHS 5751, or JHS 12AX7WA which are apparently interchangeable?  What's the difference between JHS or JAN and Gold Brand, or 5751's and 12AX7's, etc?  As you can see, I'm confused and I read some of the links in the stickies, but unfortunately I'm not really getting clear on what it's all about.

A quite good explanation on the difference and similarities between the 5751 and 12ax7 tubes is here:

A long thread on JHS, Jan and Gold Brand on head-fi.org with links to more information:

2 very nice 5751s are the Raytheon with the windmill getter and the Sylanvia 3 mica.

This pair is very nice from a very reputable dealer. http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?accstube&1329928665&/Sylvania-Matched-Pair-JHS-5751
