Amp(s) for Super-V
« on: 25 Dec 2011, 02:56 pm »
Looking for a new amp for Super-V's that I treated myself to.

Currently have a Modwright 36.5 preamp with a pair of Nuforce Ref V9 SE which have way more power than needed. I'll sell the Nuforce amps after I have tried them out.

Maybe looking for a low powered tube amp.

I mainly list to 60/70's rock and jazz.

Be interesting to hear what other Super-V owners are using.

One other question - does Dodd Audio still make the battery amps similar to those used at RMAF?

Thx

Paul

I have Pass Labs Aleph 2 monoblocks to run my Super-V's.  These are very good indeed, but decided to try low power tubes as well.

I have the Dodd battery PA.  They are discontinued at this time.  Gary is working on a new power supply for these as well as new battery monoblocks.

Update:  The Dodd battery PA at RMAF2011 was Danny's.

Interesting - I was looking at a First Watt F4 which would probably be a good match.

Maybe even consider another Class A solid state?

I recently purchased a Monarchy Audio SM-70 Pro for my 2-ch system and am extremely pleased with its performance. 25w into 8 ohms, 40w into 4 ohms. And just for the record, it doesn't get hot like traditional Class A amps. It gets moderately warm at best. Then again, it has plenty of heat sink surface area to keep things cool.

Just an update, the Dodd Battery Preamp has been updated and is now in production.
I received my new one a couple of weeks ago and it sounds marvelous.

Hey chops,
I had one of those SM 70's a few years back, I really liked it but is was a little noisy and ran very hot. I'm sure there have been changes since then as yours runs cooler. What are your thoughts on the sound (and noise level) on that little gem?

Why didn't I think of that?

If you had the original SM-70, they did quite a few upgrades to the Pro. It only gets moderately warm and is dead silent, very smooth, energetic and detailed, has great control of the bass line, and is just a really fun amp to listen to. It's like listening to a pair of B&W's vs a pair of Quad's... If that makes any sense.

Yes they are, and supply ample ventilation below the amp. Not that it needs it, but I like this way.

Thx for the replies. Now narrowed my choices to a First Watt amp (M2 or J2) and a Bottlehead Paramour using 300B's for 8 wpc approx.
