DIY basstraps
« on: 23 Dec 2011, 04:14 am »
Finally, after having this great-sounding room for almost 32 years, I've added a basstrap.  Thirty-two years ago when I rebuilt the room, I went to great lengths to eliminate many 90-degree corners, but the room's 21' width and 19' depth combine for a large bassboost at 28-30Hz.  The new trap lives at the major 90-degree intersection, of the LH wall and the rising ceiling.  The BT is 20 by 30" in crosssection and about 8' long.  Here 'tis from the right-hand doorway.

A little closer.

Its south, high end.  Endplates are 3/4" MDF.

The north end with hanger detail.

From the north (front) end of the room.

I'll have a cover made for it, about the color of the walls.  It has no plastic sheeting so it absorbs high frequencies too.

Will be building one for the back wall above the projector case.  It'll be 15" deep, 27" high, and 9' long/wide.

Probably will then have some bags made for stuffing fiberglass insulation into a few more nooks and crannies.

Very cool looking!  I like the looks but just to keep the fibers in and out of the lungs, have you thought of covering them?

How do you like the change?

Hi Jeffrey and all Audio Circle members.
Should the fiberglass be more compacted ?

No when the trap becomes that large it is actually better to use less dense fiberglass so he is fine. And yes I would cover them to keep the fiberglass dust out of the room.

I agree with eveything Glenn said up to this point. This solution is way less manual labor.

GIK Acoustics uses sound absorption insulation with ECOSE technology. Unlike most competing products, it is manufactured from naturally occurring and/or recycled raw materials and bonded using a bio-based technology free from formaldehyde, phenols, acrylics and with no artificial colors, bleaches or dyes. ECOSE reduces energy consumption and pollutants stemming from the production process and is therefore more fully recyclable than standard mineral wool or fiberglass. The absorptive core has earned the toughest indoor air quality certification in the industry, GREENGUARD™, which is certified to meet CHPS Low-Emitting Materials criteria section 01350. GIK's Treatments with ECOSE technology are easy on air quality for your room, the environment, and your budget.

I purchased fabric by the yard from ATS...you may be able to stretch the fabric and staple the ends to the wood frames you've built.

Has the trap tamed the bass Issue?

The bottom-octave bass is indeed less obtrusive--some might say less fun--with the trap installed.

Installed the backwall trap this week.  From near the doorway--

It is indeed 27" high by 15" deep by 9' wide.  It rests on 2 simple brackets and is mounted about 6" from the wall.  The foberglass droops a bit; I'll buy and install some mesh on the bottom two rails to contain it.

The room definitely got less echoey (sp?); haven't yet played music with much energy below 30Hz but will soon.  I'll do some 'after' measurements with them installed as they are; then I'll take them down to cover them and do a 'before' measurement.

There are a few more cavities--under the SuperSubs, for instance--that will benefit from soft, unframed, covered rolls of f-glass, so when my sewist starts making covers, I'll have at least a couple more BTs to install.

When your watching a movie with a lot of LFE, I'm envisioning loose fibers being rattled out of the material and being sucked in the intake of the projector.

Just a thought.

Looks awesome though. Well done.
