What am i missing???????? ( this may be long )
« on: 20 Dec 2011, 07:38 am »
hello all,

i have posted in this forum before with all questions regarding the emerald physics speakers.  if it were not for me hearing these speakers it is quite possible that i would never have known the virtues of the open baffle sound.  i have read many of the other posts looking for information that i can use
to make (roll) my own ...... with variations of course.

one of the reasons for even considering this is that there is a minimum of wood working skills needed.

so let me start with a little history / back story.  i was introduced the emerald physics back in 05 or 06 @ the CES show in vegas.  clayton introduce his reference speaker which was 4 chassis.  the sound was incredible open, fast, articulate, totally engaging i was in love but i knew that that was not any way for me to bring 4 chassis into my house.  then rocky mountain 2007 and the cs2 .... sound at a price point that was astonishing.  from then on i was hooked.  i had several conversations with clayton but new that i wanted to make my own because of improvements i felt i could make in the design.

when i envision how easy i would be to make these ( looks are deceiving ) i wonder "what am i missing"? is the mastery of the open baffle speaker really a detailed understanding of how to implement a DCX or DEQX?

so my question is this.... am i so crazy to think that i might be able to make a 3 way using the Raal dipole, 15" dipole woofers and a horn loaded compression driver for the mids?  i was thinking of a multicell horn.

tell me were my logic is bad.

thanks for saving me.

Hi :) If you are asking this, my suggestion would be that you make one with cheaper drivers first, and then decide whether you feel confident enough to proceed to the expensive project.

A horn for the mids, in a dipole? I like dipole over as much of the spectrum as I can get, but to me the midrange is where it really shines (oh, and the bass, and...... :green:).  Right now, you're looking at dipole bass > horn mids > dipole tweeter? I think the change in directivity in the midrange would be difficult to get right.........or sound right for that matter........

hey guys thanks for the replies.

i see now that my question was to specific and that the conversation should have left out specific drivers.
which would make the question much more about the easy of making an open baffle work.  the making of
the baffle is easy drivers and wood. the complexity, it would seem, is in their integration and even that
is partly automated by software.  which leave it to the fine tuning.

in regards to horns for the mids this is somewhat similar to the EmPh cs2.  yes i know that the that the bass
is dipole but everything from 1k up is waveguide / horn.

what i am thinking of is a cross between oswald mill ac1 and a bd design quasar.

i know i must be crazy.  but just as a concept ..........

I see..............you mentioned the dipole Raal, along with the midrange horn and I was trying to figure out why.......

I know nothing of horns and waveguides..........carry on!

nate

again thanks for the response.  posting ideas in these forums can be a place for the flame throwers and i appreciate you not burning me to a crisp with an idea that may seem to come out of left field.

cheers,

Hey I'm all for crazy ideas......how else would we come up with new stuff?

I'm very much a beginner at this audio stuff...but I've been building my dipoles for the last year or so and learning as I go through these forums, and much trial and error (heavy on the error!). That said, for myself, I prefer a constant dipole response (-1 db at 30* off axis, -3 at 45*, and -6 at 60*)throughout the full audio range.....or at least as high as I can get it 'till my tweeters start beaming. I've yet to play with waveguides but I think a waveguided compression driver modified to have an open back would be interesting. Not sure what the back wave would do to the waveguide directivity though. OTOH a waveguide (with no rear output) meeting up with a 12" or 15" shouldn't be too difficult as it's been done before.

Are you looking at doing this with active crossovers and eq?

Did you enjoy lab sciences in school?  'Cause that's what successful speaker building is most like.  Lots of measuring, a few equations.....

science in school is so dependent on a great teacher and seeing a purpose for the scientific method.  now i have something important to attach it to.  it makes all the difference in the world.
