Open Baffle Guys........UNITE!!!!!
« on: 20 Dec 2011, 04:12 am »
Ok, so there's a bit of a friendly chat happening about which type of bass is better.....
Maybe you've read the thread. Maybe not. But in my mind, it's turned into a bit of a pissing contest, and I'd like to win it.

What's "better"....Sealed, ported, OB, horns......

Of course I'm an OB guy, but the OB votes are lagging behind.
Voting closes soon. I was hoping OB could hold it's own, but it's not.
So I'm here to ask my OB brethren to help the vote count.  :icon_twisted:

Check the thread >> HERE <<

Thanks OB guys!
Bob

I'm firmly in the OB camp, but I also think it comes down to your room.  If you have an even, symetrical room, sealed or PR bass can be pretty darn good.  But in an uneven room like mine, OB bass is clearly the cat's meow.

Of course fans of one design but not advocates for other designs campaigning for votes will just bias the results (more than they might already be biased for other reasons).

Well.....that's exactly why I posted this in the OB section to help even things out, since the original two or three threads were posted in the enclosure section.

Momma didn't raise no dummy.

By the way....I can't believe there's only 35 OB fans that have voted.

The amount of ACphiles that have actually listened to OB speakers is waaaaaaaaaay less than those who have listened to "traditional" speakers so the results will have a built in skew.

And the premise that one type is preferable/better than another is somewhat silly.  They're aimed at different applications and usages and room conditions.....IMO.

But, I voted for OB.  :)

Cheers,

Dave.

Thank you for the vote Davey!
But yea, you're very correct about OB being at a disadvantage on most forums, which is why I had to stack the deck a bit by asking for votes here. We were getting our but kicked almost 2:1.

We are now ahead by one vote.  8)

You guys rock, thank you for the votes. The poll closes in less than five hours.
Maybe our "skewed" voting will bring more attention to the audiophile world and wake them up to the ideas of having OB in their lives like we do.

But honestly, I don't think I did anything wrong by asking for votes, I was merely bringing attention of the polls existence to the Open Baffle Circle. It was at a HUGE disadvantage being placed in a Circle devoted to boxes in the first place.

Rock on.

I bet you a whole lot of people didn't vote, regardless of their personal preference. How many members are there here at AudioCircle and how many of them actually voted?

I'd also bet you that there are way more bass reflex loudspeakers made and sold than any other type, especially when it comes to DIY. I've attended several local DIY get togethers and you hardly ever see any OBs, except maybe for Linkwitz's Orion. The biggest and most dominating trend in DIY has been the "Econowave" literally hundreds of thousands of views over at PartsExpress and diyAudio.

By the way, even though I've made more bass reflex enclosures than any other type, I didn't vote for bass reflex.

I am going to get in trouble for this one, but I will man up and admit it in public.

I voted for IB.

I have heard a lot of different types of bass in cars, home etc.

1 best bass ever - sealed in a VW Golf.  4x6.5 mids, 4x8 mid bass, 2x15 subs.
2 best bass ever - house, IB.  That was very good.
3 best bass ever - OB.

Do I doubt that OB can be excellent?  Nope.  Is it the best I ever heard?  Nope.

Is it the best I can muster in my own rooom though?  Yup, for now!

Not heard an IB but I don't really see how you get away from the room problems that way. Still, people like what they like, it's pointless to talk about "best" without defining the criteria. (No worries Bob, I took your poll to be light-hearted :) )

Thanks John.  :thumb:
After starting the poll, I regretted using the word "best". That's too subjective a word to use for the masses. My bad.
