Hi guys,

i'm looking for some advice on my about to finish room. Basically, the room measures 12'x20', and i'm looking for acoustic panels treatments to the front wall(TV and speakers side) and rear wall (Sofa side). To the left will be a big sliding door which will also have a large curtain. Ill probably go with acoustic panels of 2'x4x2'' but i'm not sure which kind is right. Any advice is appreciated.

Any chance of moving the setup so that the speakers fire the length of the room instead of the width of the room?

Unfortunately i cant move the lay out. I know the longer distance would be far better but sometimes this happen in life  If i put the tv on the left side, it will get on the way of path and will have to rewire the cable to the side as well which of course isn't going to be any good.

Double up on the heavy curtain material for the sliding door, then just some standard acoustic panels behind the TV/Speaker area.  Do you already own the speakers and sub?  If not, then getting Open Baffle for bass will help a lot, otherwise the bass will load the closed side of the room more than the open side of the room.  Also, treat the wall behind the couch with some standard acoustic panels as well. 

Also, if you can get hold of a mic, try to take some measurements of your room's bass response, and use some EQ to tame the largest humps.

i already own the sub and speakers. I guess the major issue would the close proximaty of the front and rear walls, which in this case would probably create a lot of standing wave, not sure. You said to use standard panels. I guess it wont hurt if i add two acoustics panels bass traps right?
I guess the standard panels are for the highs and the bass trap are for the lower frequencies right?

You'll also want to address the 2 left corners of the room.  The front is going to give you a lot more boundary gain from that side.  The rear one is going to be a source of a lot of additional bass 'boom' that will mask a lot of detail, imaging cues, etc.

Well, if you are sick, then you must go visit the doctor to get cured. With acoustic panel, i guess you can live with acoustic problems without getting any of the treatments.

I'm guessing you should go with absorption rather than diffusion. Although some might suggest diffusion behind your sofa I would prefer absorption, and it looks like you'll have enough reflections to deal with already.

2'x4'x2" panels are pretty standard and you can go 4" thick or denser material for increased absorption ability.

The corners, as Bryan already mentioned, and both behind the sofa and your TV/speakers would be good places for the panels. And a nice rug on the floor will help. (You could also do the ceiling if you can get away with that.)
