What was your impression of the 1.7's?
I can't seem to wrap my head about the room size needed for these to breathe.

I really liked them. Definite improvement over the 1.6s. Seemed a bit more dynamic. When I did the main system (upstairs) the basement was not yet finished so I ended up with integrated HT/music in both. If I could do it over at this point, I'd probably just do a 2-channel system w/o video in the main system and would have done more of real HT in the basement. I'd be real tempted by the 20.7s. Just too many things in the room at this point with the layout. I've been tilting the basement system over the last couple of years with changes to make it more HT (projector upgrade is next) and perhaps at some point I'll revisit the main system.

Now that the 20.7's are here, I need to really think about my room and whether the 20.7's will fit and produce optimally (20X13X8).

When I purchased my 1.7's it was with the understanding that neither the 3.7 or 20.7 were on the horizon. The 3.7 was released two months after I received my 1.7's. I am enjoying the 1.7's (with Mye stands) but I will have a pair of 3.7's in the main room for the next few months and it is a dream speaker. Given the anticipated price and the fact that subs will not be needed, I am beginning to think that some deep research is in order.

Great news for Maggie fans. Reading between the lines Cap changes and a redesign of the passive crossover appear to be the bulk of the change.

Looks like it would work the long way. (Short way too but I think you'd get better results the long way.) You might have to tame the bass a bit, never a bad thing.

Jacob has one of the best systems I've ever heard, so if he's that excited about them, you can take it to the bank...

He also has Wilson X2's as a main reference along with the 20.1's.

Great to see that Magnepan has upgraded their flagship...

They've really been on a tear since the sons took over: 1.7, 3.7, Mini Maggies, now the 20.7 - good for them, the dad must be proud.
The .7 designation leads me to believe that they followed the same path as the 1.7 and 3.7. Time will tell just what they've been up to, I suppose.
I have no doubt that they're stupendous - Wendell was pretty blown away by something they'd done recently but I didn't ask what it was. Now I know: it was the 20.7s he was talking about.
The real question for me is just how small of a room can these sound good in?
I'm not looking for theoretical advice but from the actual 20.1 owners who have first hand experience.
I took a good look at my living room when I was looking to upgrade from the 3.6s and there wouldn't be much seperation between the speakers with the 20.1s. The wall of sound, indeed.
Right now I have 12' to play with, if I took out the cabinets the room would be 14' wide.

I can't speak from experience of the 20.1's, but I've had Tympanis in rooms too small for them and they were great, it reinforces the bass. Worst case, you have to EQ the bass down a little (though I didn't have to do that).

If they changed the order of the XO to a lower one, changed round wire for flate, changed some caps and wiring , raised the XO for the ribbon they made a good facelift which they should done years ago. But I am shure they forgot to change the binding posts and stands...I would love to believe that they made a completly new 20.7 which blows the 20.1 away, but I think that there is not so much room for improvement by simply changing the parts mentioned above. Some more radical approach would be also nice.
About room size.. I think you need at least 16 feet wide and 19- 20 long(but still having them more then 6 feet from the font wall).

That's was my thinking about the room as well.
Kind of like Goldilocks, this one's too little (1.7), this one's too big (20.7), this one's just right (3.7).
If a local dealer gets a set in I'll have to take a run down and give a listen just to be sure.
I can't say about the Tympanis as I've never owned a set but I have put
I-C's and IIIa's in rooms that were too small and that didn't work out too well.

Wow, I have my 1.7's in a dedicated 16X18X10 room and feel that's not big enough to get the best out of them.
