I've hung on to my Pilot AA-908 for many years now with hopes of restoring it for use in my mono system or pairing it up with another for stereo playback. My love for SET tube amplification and spending most of my audio budget dollars in that arena have moved the recap of this amp to the bottom of the "to-do" list countless times. Now it's time to let it go.
The AA-908 is a bit of a rare bird and quite well regarded by Pilot lovers and collectors. I'm not quite sure how many of these mono amplifiers were actually produced by Pilot but I have read that it was in the neighborhood of 100 or so. Other than some pitting (most of which is hidden under the cage and seen in the photos), mine is in very nice cosmetic condition. This amplifier has not been tested or brought to life on a variac but visual inspection of components and wire leads off the transformers show no sign of stress. I would assume the EL34 output tubes are original metal based (amperex) along with the rectifier. I would have to look again but if memory serves, the (2) 12AX7's are amperex and Sylvania. The EL34 outputs look a little tired but I could provide tube readings along with the others from my Heathkit TT1a tester.
