How do you organize your HDD's?
« on: 15 Dec 2011, 09:49 pm »
Hi everyone,

Since we're all growing out of our Hdd's shortly because of the rapidly growing number of songs and size of files stored (last download was 3,27 gb) , I was wondering which organizing strategies you all have.

I now have 2 1tb hdd's, one with all pop-music stored by artist, and then albums, one Hdd with the rest of my music, categorized by style, then artist and then album. Only my classical recordings are categorized by composer, then work, then artist.

Have had to change my filing system twice now, because of changing Hdd's, and foresee another switch, after having ripped all my Ring-cycles........I see a third hdd with only classical and Jazz arriving, but how to connect to the BDP1 then. Upgrade to bigger discs?

So was wondering which strategy you all have.

Thanks,
Marius

ps before Ted_b punishes me for posting in the wrong circle: I'd be interested especially in the BDP1 owners strategies because of the same hardware circumstances we all share. (but don;t let non bdp1 owners stop that from reacting, please.)

I listen to a wide variety of genres.  I like to store artist/title.

I do create compilation folders though; like Christmas, WWOZ (for their sampler CDs), Blues, Celtic, etc.

I haven't found a client yet that I really like to sort through though.  I like GNOME the best.

I have two Seagate GoFlex Portable 500 GB hard drives and two 32 GB USB Flash drives (Lexar). File by artists then aalbums. Often will purchse and download to the flash drives (for convenience) first and then transfer the files to the Seagates. Keep a back-up of all music on my desktop computers extra internal 1.5 TB hard drives times two.

Before you mentioned it, I never knew there was a problem!
mPad creates a single list from all drives connected to the BDP
Doesn't really matter where the files are.
If you have two Beethoven symphonies each on different drives, both appear together in mPad
Or am I missing your point?

I believe so, that is if your replying to me..... :?

I was just wondering how you all organize most effectively and robustly future proof ( I've had to change HDd's now twice, and it took very long to copy everything back again from the backups, like to prevent that as much as possible). If there is an smarter way of organizing the hods than I am doing right now, I'd love to hear your advice.

But you brought up another thing in Mpad. I like to browse for music while playing and find it not very user friendly there is no 'path-bar' in Mpad, one can only go back up the folder-tree, and there is no way of selecting a certain HDd. Since I have hdd's organized by style, I like to be able to do just that.

related: playing an album, Id like to be ble to click it and jump to that folder/file in the interface. Not possible either. (as in Max, would be great if that could be implemented) I've asked Berrie, and am waiting for his answer. Also for the answer on the info.txt pointer.

But this is of topic...

A feature Berrie added for liner texts apparently. You can enter the name and Path, I did, but there's no way to show it, at least as far as I have found to date.

Works for me
Press on an album cover for longer than normal and a menu appears
One item is Liner Notes.
Now I'm busy adding loads of pdf's to my BDP drive

The name of your files matches that in the configuration?
It is case sensitive too
Got the latest mPad?

yes, latest Mpad. I which view is this possible? In album view I get a menu: play this album now, play...next, play only this album, add this album.

That's all. no Liner notes. Is this menu option always available or only when there actually is a pdf or txt-file?

o wait, I pointed to info.txt again, saved it once more, and now I see the option in the Album view. (unfortunately not in the lower left corner where the album art is displayed when playing.

Strangely enough, it doesn't find the info.txt, but keeps wanting a notes.pdf file.

I'm clicking on the album cover in the right of the screen.
Try a PDF instead of txt file

Hey Marius. Did you get the LinerNotes.pdf file to show up in mPAD?

Hi Terry,

Thanks for asking.
Strangely enough, Mpad kept asking for notes.pdf while I had pointed it to info.txt, because I have a lot of those in my files. Afterwards it changed into asking, but not finding info.txt

do you have a path setting?

Marius
suddenly I realize I have 2 iPads, maybe with conflicting settings. Would that be the culprit. Or would the one iPad look for notes.pdf and the other for info.txt....

I've configured iPad with LinerNotes.PDF
I put a PDF with that name in the same directory as the flac files and it just works.
Sometimes I have to double tap the big button at the bottom of the iPad (what's it called), hold doe the iPAD icon and kill it from memory as it tnds to get it's knickers in a twist every so often, but it does work.
Taking me ages to update all those albums with PDFs though.

just checked again: I have info.txt indicate in  the appropriate field, but Mpad keeps returning the errormessage about the missing notes.pdf.

I'll find a notes.pdf and check with that.

Looking any good?
