Hoiman,

the whole trade-in thing is not ok for those who thought that the SP1, SP1.7 and SP2 would be "future proof"...in  the end it was not. i believe James that Bryston tried anything to implement the new HD chips into the 'old' units. and it is of course not Bryston's fault that it didn't work...but it is not 'our' fault either! and again by reading the new brochure of the SP3 Bryston claims that the SP3 will be upgradeable for future formats - what if not??
on top of it my dealer told me that i could trade in my SP2 for (WOW!) 1000 Euros and then i would have to pay another 9500 Euros to get the SP3. are you kidding? knowing that the SP2 was 7000 Euros only a few years ago makes it a total of 16500 Euros 'only' for a preamp. bad idea especially if the SP3 is actually 10500 Euros. who is going to do this? it doesn't make any sense.

i am a loyal Bryston customer and i really love them for what they do and i have now two Bryston setups at home. but this is not what i thought it should be. and yes i am disappointed.

Because I want to use dolby digital HD true hd or whatever this new formats are called.
And I didn't just bought it one, I just got a new one because my first one gave it up.

Hi Hoiman, you should be able to use the SP2 to pass-through decoded DolbyTrueHD and/or DTS-Master Audio signal.  You would need a Blu-ray player that has full analogue outs and therefore, processes the DolbyTHD/DTSMA internally converting in from digital to individual analogue channel outputs, which your SP2 could then receive and pre-amplify before ouputting to your amplifier.  The video signal though would need to be sent by component signal to the SP2, since there is no HDMI input.

********
I use analog out from Blu Ray to SP 1.7 and HDMI to the PJ.

Happy New Year everyone.
Would like to ask a bit of help re SP2. It was boxed for a an year and took it out to test with 4BSST and some flac. Setup as simple as possible:
ext HDD via USB to Oppo 95 via R/L RCA to SP2 (CD in) via RCA to 4BSST playing flac (2ch bypass).

Sound is pleasing but, display on SP2 doesn't show anything? Is this normal for stereo? Is there any way to try factory reset of SP2 to enable display?

Also on power down and power up via remote SP2 picks the following:
CD: GRN/Digital: RED/Bypass: GRN
when toggling other source by remote and return to CD source the following are lit:
CD: GRN/Digital: RED/Surround: GRN/Mode: GRN/Bypass: GRN
toggling Mode or Stereo doesn't change anything as latter configuration stays lit.
Is this normal?
What is recomended power up/power down sequence (volume all the way down), as sometime there is slight pop in speakers?
Thank you.

SP2 display was lit back then, barely looked at it, but did not played with the setup/surround modes, nor with multi ch inputs, as was testing pair of PP300, and setup was somewhat different:
ext HDD via USB to ACRyan via R/L RCA to SP2 (CD in) via RCA to Onkyo 5007 (aux in) via RCA to PP300 playing flac (2ch bypass).

Played for about two hours without much toggling (if at all), and boxed SP2 and PP300s until today.

Now the extra processor is out of chain and source different.

Reading the manual the rear power switch may need to be toggled since the unit was in storage.

As for powering up/down the unit may be in auto-digital detect mode. You have to press mode button to defeat auto-detect.

Pressing Save on remote will keep the selected setting before powering down.

You can download the manual from Bryston.ca

Thank you James, Mag,

Rear power switch was actually off while in storage, and toggled it couple of times since yesterday. Actually, it was even unplugged overnight, in the morning repeated yesterday's result with RCA all the way.
Strange behaviour indded, so setup changed
ext HDD via USB to Oppo 95 via digital coax to SP2 (leftmost COAX in) via RCA to 4BSST playing flac.
SP2 display inactive;
somehow managed to get sound pressing AUX on remote;
from a front panel readout:
Aux: GRN/Dig: GRN/Stereo: GRN (balance knob no effect)
Toggled other source on remote and back to AUX:
Front panel readout became:
Aux: GRN/Dig: GRN/Surround: GRN/Mode: GRN
Toggling Mode on remote audibly went thru various SPs , THX on remote lit GRN, further remote: 2ch bypass GRN lit (no sound); 6ch bypass ORG lit (no sound).
Then following Mag’s advice remote Mode/Save, power down/power up back to:
Aux: GRN/Dig: GRN/Stereo: GRN
And things really went awry – no effect whatsoever from remote, even volume up/down; power down not reacting.

Volume knob down all the way manually/power down back switch manually.
Restart in an hour, front panel readout defaulting at:
Aux: GRN/Dig: GRN/Surround: GRN/Mode: GRN

Talking about manuals since yesterday got both hard copy beside me, Bryston site downloaded onscreen, to little, or no avail.

However, p.8 11: Fuses says ‘Please note that the Analog and Digital power supplies are fused separately. Replace fuse ONLY with an exact equivalent to avoid damage to the SP2.’

Could it be fuses, somehow? How to test if these failed? What are equivalents for SP2-17-230?
Thank you.

Hi James,

Thank you for your involvment. I was about to give Mike Pickett a call, but decided another try and connected same source by both analogue RCA/digital coax. Strange thing is, it seems SP2 coming slowly back to life, responding to remote buttons it didn't respond couple of days before, though SP2 display still inactive.

May I ask for Mike Pickett's e-mail, PM or here, whatever appropriate.

Being seven hours ahead of Peterborough would like to prepare small matrix containing what SP2 responds to, what doesn't, and mail it to Mike beforehand, instead of wasting his time over the phone scratching my head for answers for a processor that I'm yet fairly unfamiliar with.
