I'ld bet my CG's 6db/oct rolloff is a match for these in terms of smoothness and end point.

That guy is a regular on AA. In principal, I do think it is important to time align, but only down to a certain Hz, depends on the bandwidth of a horn. I don't think sub 60hz is very important to time align. Above 100hz is important.

In no small way the diy community is responsible for a big push to do those. They originally started out by doing a frugel-horn Mk1 and claiming it was their own. An uproar from the community, some help from 6 moons, and the realization that once they admitted the source of the designm that their $12k price tag could not be justified they went back to the drawing board and did these.
