Is this an improvement in SQ?
« on: 30 Nov 2011, 06:17 pm »
I converted some mp3's to wav upon hearing that wav has better SQ, and to boot I converted some flac files as well. I do know that flac trumps mp3, and I recently heard that wav trumps flac, that's why I tried it. I was satisfied with flac for PC and mp3 for ipod. I know the sample rate went up from 44.1 to 48, did I increase from 16 to 24 as well? MediaMonkey natively does flac at 16/44.1. I don't use a DAC, and I'm aware that some indicate this on the unit with LED's...aside from this I'm a know-not. Any clues?

Probably not an inprovement in sound quality. The WAV file will just be a larger file. The MP3 is a lossy codec and WAV is a lossless codec. Once a file is made lossy it can not be made whole again.

I didn't improve the mp3? I get that. So, did I degrade the flac by making it a wav?

You can convert Flac to WAV without any quality loss. Regarding the MP3 to WAV, I would try it first to see if you personally can notice a difference. Your system may not be able to produce a difference.

I don't believe any system will be able to produce an improvement.  Mine certainly doesn't.  The only difference you will likely see is a larger file, from just over 4 times the size for 320kbps MP3s to 11 times the size for 128kbps MP3s.

You not only converted from MP3 to WAV, you also applied sample rate conversion (44.1 > 48)
This often produces audible artifacts.
If you convert 16 bits audio to 24  you simply add 8 zero bits. This won’t improve sound quality (won’t harm it too)

There is possible improvement. I say possible because whether or not you like what you hear is up to you. I don't know if this has to do with how windows and/or certain playback software process mp3s vs wav or who knows what but this is something I caught on to way back years ago before I even knew or cared that much about sound quality. It's certainly worth experimenting with. That said it's not enough of an 'improvement' to go chasing after unless you're just curious or have too much time on your hands like me. Won't turn lemons into lemonade.
