BDP-1 Start Up Problem
« on: 30 Nov 2011, 02:46 pm »
I have had a problem on three recent occasions when turning on the BDP-1.  After it goes through the updating step the display reads "Unsupported_FS" and does not go any further.  Turning the BDP-1 power off and back on once or twice has corrected the problem.  I assume that the failure means unsupported file system which could mean that I have an impending hard drive failure (I am using a SSD) or perhaps it is a BDP software problem (I am still using the 7-15-2011 release).  Has anyone had a similar problem?  Any ideas?

Hi Tony,

Yes it means it is seeing a file it does not like or an operating system it does not like (EX MAC HFS). Have you added any drives that may be MAC formatted drives?

Anyway the new October 1st software will read HFSPlus formatted drives - (it will still show unsupported for a short time but will move on quickly).

Hi Tony,

I have a sneaky suspicion that you formated the drive on a mac.  When you format a drive using a GUID partition map it creates a small 200MB fat32 partition called EFI.  It is this partition on the drive that the BDP-1 is referring to when it says "Unsupported_FS".  The other partition with all your music on it should be visible to the BDP-1.

Cheers,
Chris

James and Chris,
Thanks for the quick replies.  Yes, the drive was formatted FAT32 on a MAC.  I have seen that EFI but have ignored it.  The drive was formatted almost a year ago and only music files have been added.  Only recently have I noticed the Unsupported_FS and had the hangup on start.  It sounds like the Oct software will stop the hangup.  James, I'll send an email to you to get the SW update.
Thanks,
Tony

Hi

I have BDP-1 with 3TB external hdd
I get unsupported_fs message after booting, however after few seconds drive is available. Drive is formatted NTFS under Windows with GPT to access more than 2TB

The strange thing that happens to me is when I connect second HDD, similar with the first one (3TB WD)
- randomly I can see either only one of the drives or both of them
- update command is not working - it is displayed for a second and disappears

Hi,

Yep, I had that for a long time, and then found out the drive wasn't formatted corectly. In my case (im on a mac) I had to format the hdd's  fat32, (MS-Dos) using the MBR option.

Unsupported_fs disappeared, working wonders for the stability. If your on a mac, also check the "apple-files". the BDp1 doesn't like those, and getting rid of them really solves a lot of issues. I've made a separate Ac-post about it a while ago: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=109332.0

Good luck,
MArius

The issue with MBR formatting is that it does not support capacity > 2 TB

Aha, I understand, won't that work with formatting it into two partitions?
Please don't take any risks in this, I never had a larger HDd than 2 tb yet, maybe some friends at Ac can chime in here?

Hi,

When ever you format a drive with a GPT (windows) or guid (Mac and Linux) it creates a small partition (usually labeled efi) it is this partition that is causing the error message to appear.  The drive should still be usable.  Check the drive information page to see if both drive show in there, if they do try updating via the update button on the same page.

Cheers
Chris

First time, both drives appeared in settings. I copied some music ~100GB on each and attached them again. Update was complet on first drive and did not complete on the second. I restarted the player. From this moment only one drives appears as conected to unit after startup, sometime first, sometime second. Also i noticed that i can't see the drives over the network anymore using windows explorer.

Ok, I believe I can add more info on my issue which I consider it is a bug in my firmware 10-05-2012

As I don't believe in random, I tried to identify the situation when both drives appears and when only one appears.

both drives: if I switch on the player with no hdd attached, then attach one drive, wait a little and attach second drive, BDP-1 will recognize both drives with no apparent issue.

single drive: if I attach the drives to the player when off and after that switch the player on, only one drive will appear as attached to the player.

I saved the system logs for both scenarios; while I have limited understanding of what is written there, it is obvious that the steps when detecting the drives are not the same.

I don't know what is the usual procedure for raising firmware issues with Bryston, maybe someone can guide me

For the moment this is not an critical issue for me, however I would like to know that in the future I can use both my HDD without detaching and attaching USB cables

Thank you

Hi ttsto,

Are both the drives USB powered?  I ask because the bdp in my bosses office has a 3tb and 2tb non USB powered drives combine have over 80,000 files and hasn't experienced this issue.  Also it's possible it was an issue with that version of the software as our bdp's generally kept up to date.  Email me for a copy of our latest firmware.

Cheers,
Chris
