EAC - noob question
« on: 29 Nov 2011, 06:09 pm »
Hey fellas.
I'm a bit embarrassed to even ask this one, but I've not been able to figure it our myself, soo......

I recently started using a new (used) PC for music. As a result, I installed EAC. Well, it's been years since I've messed with the inner working of EAC, and things have changed quite a bit.

Bottom line, I'm ripping music, and it's taking ten minutes or to complete (like it always did), but the Squeeze software can't find the music. When I do a search for the music, I find that EAC has put the "file" in the correct location on the correct external drive, but the file that's stored there is not FLAC music, it's a couple dozen Kb of text that is nothing more than the final screen you get after ripping a disc.

Any ideas what that's all about?
Thanks guys!
Bob

That's the LOG file.  Not sure why it would find the right location for that and not the music.  Can you do a global search on all drives for either .WAV or FLAC files depending on what format you're ripping to and see where (if anywhere) they're going?

I did a search on [My Computer] which includes the C: drive and most importantly the G: drive (that's where the music is).

I had ripped a disc and purposely misspelled the artist. After the rip, the only "hit" of that misspelled name was the LOG file on G:.

Thanks B!

OK.  So can you look in the Server side of the Logitech Media Server under the Library tab for the library location and also in EAC under OPTIONS, Directory tab for that location.  Are they the same and have you told it not to use iTunes?

I would still look for wav and flac files in case something in the naming convention is set so that it doesn't include the artist name.

EDIT: Before you read all this, check my next post

The LMS and EAC locations are the same and both use------> G:\FLAC\FLAC\

iTunes is not checkmarked in LMS

I do not know how to seach by file type (WAV or FLAC). But I did manage to find the ability to search by [date modified] I found no "hits" regarding the CD I ripped for the day I ripped it, but am trying to rip another one to double check. Inconclusive answer for that question at this point.

I'm also using Windows 7, by the way.

Also, I use to rip using the EAC setting "Copy Compressed" (because it goes to wav, then FLAC) but heard I should have beeing using "Copy Uncompressed".

Thanks again Bryan,
Bob

I found them!

All of the tracks are being stored on "G:FLAC", where they're supposed to be, but not under the artists name/album/.
Each song is it's own file, and is being stored as a WAV.

Seems like an easier issue to resolve now, but I thought I'd been through all this.
Possibly, there's an answer in a thread I started last week in this Circle, most likely on page two by now.

Follow these guides here:  http://blowfish.be/eac/
to install, setup and use EAC.

These are the best guides around.

OK.  So can you see the files on the SB if you just look in the music folder rather than by artist?

Sounds like just the organization/naming parameters are not set correctly.

Aleg - Thanks man. But that's actually the one I used!
(page two of the Circle here, I have another noob thread and used the same link)
Although, there are a few buttons different from teh version I downloaded to the one shown in the walkthough.

Bryan, - Huge Thanks to you Sir.  :thumb:
Yea, I might ask some more help on that one. the way they organize all that has thrown me for a loop in the past. I'll give it a shot at home tonight. If it's as simple as putting the dot in the box on the LMS page, I'll be alright. If it comes to adjusting the code, I'm screwed.

Sounds like just the organization/naming parameters are not set correctly.
So in the EAC tab [Meta Data Options], I get the default of:

%tracknr%;%artist%;%title%;%tracklen%

Yes indeed, it's been dropping each song in it's own individual folder, starting with the track number.
Ok, I got that. Obviously, that's a horrible way of organizing a library.

What I'd like, would be to have folders in the order of; [Artist] > [Album] > [Track]
But "album" doesn't appear anywhere on the EAC options.

Is it as simple as making my own code of ......%album%...... Certainly not?

It does help if you actually read the setup guide I sent you the link for, even better is understanding what you are doing, e.g. knowing that metadata is not about file locations and filename structures:

Look at this section of the guide http://blowfish.be/eac/Setup/setup3.html#no3e and find the equivalent settings in your version.

Nice......yea.....  :?   I got that, thanks for the help dude. That make you feel better about yourself?

First of all, I read that horrible several page "walk through" I found on the net three weeks before you gave it to me. The same walk through that doesn't help me step-by-step since it's for a version of EAC that I can't find.

If you had read this thread and the posts I've made, especially the ones I was making when replying directly to you, I did make reference to the fact that I read the link you sent me before you sent it to me. Three weeks before in fact. Just in case you don't want to go back, THIS THREAD is the one I'm talking about. Check the first post I made, which has a link to the same "helpful walk through" link that you posted.

I've also mentioned the fact that the buttons they say to press are different than the buttons available to me in a great many cases. Seems there are different versions of EAC out there.
Huh...No shit.
That doesn't help me. But thanks Aleg for sending me right back there for some more non-helpful information.

So....the link you sent me to didn't help. It's possible I'm a complete dumbass and just plain don't get it. That's a distinct possibility. But if you're going to help me, then help me. All I ask is that you lay off the testy snippy comments like you made in your last post. I'm not married to you and don't need attitude from you.

Second of all, your comment about "even better is understanding what you are doing"...obviously I don't. That should be crystal clear. If I did, I wouldn't have started two threads asking for help regarding getting one piece of software to work properly.

Sorry for the rant, but life is shitty enough without having a like minded audio brethren kick me in the balls because he thinks I didn't read what he told me to read and that I'm too fucking stupid to know what I'm doing (which again, I plainly don't, but thanks for pointing it out).

Since I'm ranting......You know what Aleg, chances are pretty damn high that I can rebuild the engine and transmission in every vehicle you have ever touched in your life. I've also built a half dozen pair of speakers in the last couple years for myself and for other people. Every one of them got complements on sound quality. I can build a damn fine sounding audio and home theater room, starting with concrete walls and floor.
But the fact that I don't understand EAC doesn't mean I deserve your snippy degrading remarks.

Hi Bill

Just to show I'm not a complete bastard (at least not all of the time)

done with the latest EAC-version 1.0 beta 3

1. Start EAC
2. Menu:            EAC
3. Menu-option:  EAC-options
4. Tab:               Filename

Setup your naming scheme with the elements shown in the screen and use backslash characters to mark directory - levels

The configuration for how files are named and where they are placed is under EAC > EAC Options, not under EAC > Metadata Options.

First,  on the 'Directories' tab, enter the root directory for your FLAC library.

G:\FLAC

Then, on the 'Filename' tab, under 'Naming scheme' you would want to use something like this:

%artist%\%albumtitle%\%tracknr2% %title%

The part following the final backslash will depend on how exactly you want the file names formatted. This is what I use, but you may want to add a period or a dash after the track number, or do something else altogether such as include the artist or album name in the file name.

If you always fill in the CD Artist in EAC when you rip a CD, then it would be better to designate the CD Artist (album artist) for the artist directory.

%albumartist%\%albumtitle%\%tracknr2% %title%

You'll probably also want to construct a rule for compilation (various artist) albums. So check the 'Use various artist naming scheme' box below that. Depending on where you want these albums to be placed and how you want the files name, perhaps use something like:

Various Artists\%albumtitle%\%tracknr2% %artist% - %title%

Aleg, Thank you for sticking with me. You're a real trooper for that.    :thumb:

Earlier, I commented I wanted [Artist] > [Album] > [Track] but couldn't find it. Reason was, I was looking down the right side column (where words are in English without symbols) and never saw the word "album". I didn't notice that [CD Title] was %albumtitle%.
Until the post you made last night, where you show "albumtitle" in the string, I couldn't find where EAC recognized the name of the album. My boneheaded mistake. Now I see it, thank you for that.

I don't care about track "numbers", all I care about is [Artist(name)] > [Album(name)] > [Track(name)].
So when I scroll through my harddrive, I see nothing but a list of artists, with a + in front of their name.
When I click on that +, it expands to show each album I own this artist has.
In front of each album is a +, and when it's clicked on, each song within that album shows.
That would make my OCD dreams come true.
(But then, I assume the album artwork for each album would be its own single file listed along with the songs?)

So based on what I'm looking for, and judging by what you and JEaton are saying, I should make a string that looks like:
%artist%\%albumtitle%\ %title%
---although-- maybe it should it look like:
%albumartist%\%albumtitle%\ %title%

I'm not sure what the word "album" in that first category is going to do the organizational structure.
I don't know the difference between "artist" and "albumartist". Seems like it'd be the same thing to me.

Thank you guys for your patience with a dumbass such as myself.
