WTB: Decent SS amp in good condition, cheap!
« on: 29 Nov 2011, 12:12 am »
I'm looking for a decent solid state amp to drive a pair of Magnapan MMG's in a small room. It will be used with an Anthem TLP-1 preamp. Rotel? Parasound? NAD? Adcom? Anthem? AVA? 100wpc to ? Under $500, shipped to Baltimore? Anyone have anything interesting collecting dust in the closet that they would like to see find a good home?

How cheap?  Have you considered one of the better used pro amps like Crown, Qsc, etc.  Or, you can pick up a pretty nice Adcom 555 on Audiogon for a reasonable price, too.  Not real sure what you're  specifically looking for.  You usually have to pay some serious $$ for the better amps.  But, if you're looking to spend up to $500, you should be able to pick up a pretty good used amp on A'gon.

The TLP-1 is a nice SS linestage preamp, too.

Second the motion on a 555.  Nice combination for low $$...

B&K ST-140 might be a consideration. :dunno: They can be had in the $250 price range. Nice sounding amp, esp for the $$$.

How about some Tripath power?  I've got a nice Audiosource Amp 7T that I've used with my Maggies and it is a great combination.  PM me if interested.

How about the Class D amp someone is selling here from San Francisco.  Look on the trading post.  That would probably work well if still available.

I believe the SDS-258 is 8 ohms, whereas the SDS-254 is 8 and 4 ohms.

Aren't Maggies rated at 4 ohms?  Just to be sure.

The Audiosource Amp 3 would seem to be ideal if you want to do this cheaply.Rated at 300 watts into 4 ohms, and you would still have the better part of your amp budget.

Moscode 300, a tube/ss design makes my Maggies SING.  I used to have Crown, Phase Linear, Yamaha, Adcom, etc., and thought the idea of tubes was stupid.  Then my B&M dealer insisted I try a used one, and I've never look back.

Not common, but usually in the $400 range.  150wpc into 8 ohms, and rarely have to replace the input tubes.

Edit:  What part of Balmer?  I grew up there!   :thumb:

Another edit:  Hafler XL-280.  Runs a little warm but close to the Moscode in SQ.  Under $300 is the usual price.
