Saw this last night. Interesting film. If you've seen the trailers then you may be in for a suprise. Scorcese is pulling a bait and switch. You THINK it's about one thing but it's really about, well I don't think I'm spoiling anything here, it's about filmmaking. Literally. Complete with mini-lecture. So be warned, if you think it's just going to be kids running around solving a mystery amidst wonderment and stuff, er not so much. That said it's very well made, looks beautiful. Does it need 3D? Frankly, no. But then most 3D films lose nothing in 2D IMO, with the exception of anything done by James Cameron (see Titanic 3D thread).

There is also a distinct feeling of 'let's use this film to educate children by using SAT words and emphasizing the value of books'. I kid you not. You'll understand when you see it.

Sacha Baron Cohen steals the film (surprise) despite a slightly weird performance. Interesting character behavior, but the guy is so good he makes it work. Sir Ben is of course, phenomenal and will probably be nominated, especially given the significance of his character.

All in all a good film. A little slow. Just be prepared for less adventure and more Reading/Film Rainbow.

Thank you, wushuliu!

I've been looking forward to this for a while.  (It is an even heat with 'That Artist' as to which I get to first!)
Yours is not the first 'interesting', unexpected point of view.  I smile in anticipation!

Much obliged!

I enjoyed it a lot. Perhaps not a truly great film, but for me and my wife a very enjoyable one. It is not really a kid's movie, IMO, but has some real subtleties and the film history angle. Above all, a visual treat.  3D was fun; I look forward to seeing it again in 2D.

A terrific movie.  One of the best I've seen this year.  Is it a great film?  Only time will tell, but I certainly thought that it was exceedingly well crafted.

Saw it in 3D with my kids (14 and 11), we all really enjoyed it. I don't think the 3D added much to the film, I tend to find it distracting even. I'm looking forward to seeing it in my HT on Blu when it becomes available.

Rented it tonight. Wife and both loved it!  Wonderful story telling!  Stunning visuals that support the film, but don't dominate!   4 stars out of 5!  :thumb:

It was an interesting film with a different kind of story. I love it when Hollywood manages to come up with something new and different rather than rehashing the same old plot lines. For that reason alone I would give it 4/5 stars, and the production quality was excellent.

However, from a purely personal level it was an enjoyable story. Nothing more though. I don't think it deserves best actor or supporting actor or any other awards other than for its production quality.

Fortunately the wife talked me into seeing it on the big screen.  The stations scenes and shots overlooking Paris, and even the old pioneer film scenes were very effective- very cool cinematography.  It surprised me with its quality.  I highly recommend it. ****

Looks like I'm the odd man out. Thought it was a snoozerama. Seemed like someone in the film industry (Johnny Depp producer) finding a way to pat the early pioneers of film on the back. Probably good for a film class but not an Academy Award winning major motion picture.  I give it 2 snoozers!
