System 'recipe' advice...if you please
« on: 27 Nov 2011, 03:14 am »
Ok...I've finally settled on the basic structure of my pending set up - however, I DO need advice when it comes to brand name components and wires...also, some discussion re: the wisdom (or lack there of) would be appreciated.
I am considering a tube preamp/solid state amp set up. The turn table is most likely to be a Pro-Ject RPM model...(9.1 maybe?)

In general, I think that it's fine to use a tube pre amp with a solid state power amp. In fact, there are plenty of people here that enjoy that combination. You might want to list the names of some of the components that you are considering if you want specific advice. (Don't forget the speakers.)

If you are putting a system together from scratch then it might be easier to focus on matching the power amplifier to the speaker first. Once you have that sorted out it will be easier to choose which pre amp works best with your power amp. I recommend this generically because most people fall in love with a speaker before considering an amplifier or a pre-amp.

YMMV of course.  :D

Quiet Earth is right - the speakers (room size and listening preferences) will tend to dictate what you wind up with.  That along with money, of course.
