Wish You Were Here - SACD

Just got done doing some spot listening, going back and forth between non-downmixed 5.1 and the stereo mix. The L & R channels of the 5.1 mix sound better than the stereo mix. Pretty pathetic. My understanding is that AP went back to the original multi-tracks to make a new surround mix. Wish they would have extended the same courtesy to those of us in stereoland.

At first listen, the Immersion Blu-Ray (which is only at 24/96) sounds better than the SACD stereo layer. I will do more comprehensive listening when I'm less hacked off.

Interested in the impressions/takes on the SACD from other listeners, and what they are comparing the SACD against.

On the plus side, I'll take the AP packaging/extras over the the Immersion Box any day of the week.

I think the 2 channel layer sounds very good, not as good as I was hoping though.

Anyone know if the Experience RB remaster is worth a darn?

The Experience "Wish You Were Here" sounds smoother and less edgy than the old version.  Instruments are clearer sounding.  At 11.99 it is a no brainer upgrade.

+1. The new RB for DSOTM is of the same caliber. As an aside, the reviews for this latest round of catalog reissues seem to be very positive. I'll be picking up Meddle and Animals.

Thanks for the feedback, does sound like little risk for $12. Is the DSOTM better than the RB layer on the previous SACD release?

I don't have the SACD, so, I have no idea about the RB layer.

Ran the RB layer from the SACD against the 2011 RB catalog remaster. The catalog remaster suffers by comparison: The RB from the SACD has better detail and less compression. Overall, a sound that is a touch more dry than what I'm used to, but not unpleasantly so. Going to give it a few days before comparing the stereo Blu-ray to the stereo SACD.

Ran the stereo SACD track against the stereo track on the Blu-ray. At first blush, they seemed pretty close. Closer listening had a lot of subtleties coming out on the SACD: Tighter bass response, and better definition overall.

One example is Nick's cymbal work during "Have A Cigar." On the Blu-ray, you can tell what kind of cymbals are being played. On the SACD, the cymbals actually sound like they are supposed to: the decay on the ride cymbal is quite noticeable. Nick's drum work is typically on the soft side. For the first time, I'm hearing all of the subtlety that comes with it. Wonderful stuff.

Overall, the SACD track had the same kind of dryness to it I found with the RB track, and again, it's not a problem. In a lot of ways, the SACD feels like a Steve Hoffman job. This disc is a must have for all Floydians.

Sorry for this silly question...but, is there more than one SACD release of this? Or is the hardcover with the burning photograph on the cover the only one?
