I have one of those. You get what you pay for....$12 seems about right. :|

I've never seen or used a STAHL, are they that bad?

Can anyone recommend a good reliable user friendly soldering station?  I plan to do some DIY work (eg, speaker crossover build and also modding electronics).  I'm a novice at this.  I would like a station that can display the temperature.  My budget is around $100 to $200.  Thanks.

Hi,

If you wish a soldering station, Parts Express has a Weller and Stahl have stations.

Weller for $139.00. Part number is: 372-140. (Different soldering tips also available.)

Weller station, part number 372-120 also available for $45.88. Adjustable power 5-40 watts.

Stahl has one, part no. 374-100 for $15.87

Stahl, part no. 374-200 for $59.50

Radio Shack as a basic 30 watt soldering iron that works quite fine for just a few dollars. Your choice.

or catalog for more information.

Cheers.

Used my new Hakko FX-888 and I must say, for the $$ it's a great little unit right out of the box. Now I need some more tips.  :thumb:

+1

I just bought a FX-888 too. Used it last night and it worked excellently. :thumb: I'm impressed with the construction quality. The iron holder is cast iron. :o Some don't like the colors but I'm OK with them; function is more important. I was going to go with this: http://www.web-tronics.com/70-watt-soldering-station.html but sight unseen, I chose to go with the established brand, made in Japan Malaysia , with stellar reviews.

I've had a couple of the "less expensive" brands and finally broke down
and bought a Weller station with dual irons.  BIG difference.

Will the above suffice for my Buffalo III build or should I be looking at any additional tips?

The FX-888 is excellent! I ordered a catalog from them and had it less than a week later, quite a bit of tips to choose from.
