Switching out speakers : Dummy Load or No Load
« on: 16 Nov 2011, 12:23 am »
I previously posted about my 14B-ST : http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=100065.0

When switching the speakers out during power off, do I need to switch in a Dummy Load (presumably 8 ohms per channel) ?

I plan to switch my speakers electronically during the power up/down sequence.

So the power up sequence is : switch on preamp, switch on power amp, switch in speakers.
The power down sequence is : switch out speakers, switch off power amp, switch off preamp.

I'm thinking simply switching out the speakers and leaving the amplifier with No Load is probably ok. The current draw at No Load is pretty much zero, but I'm thinking it leaves the amplifier with nothing external to discharge through.

Why would you need a dummy load? An amplifier usually discharges internally all by itself regardless if there is a load or not.

As long as your configuration & process do present a short or near short circuit to the output terminals of the amp I think you can do what you want.

Did you mean to say "...do not present..."?
