Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (SACD)
« on: 14 Nov 2011, 10:37 pm »
I preordered the SACD from Acoustic Sounds when it first came out.  I received mine while I was on the road (standard) on the first day of release.  Needless to say I've spent most of the day listening to the 2-channel, multichannel and the RB rip all day today.  I'll start by saying it's worth the wait!

CD Rip - excellent!  Strong bass lines, exceptional sonics.  Overall clarity for a RB rip is outstanding.

2-channel SACD - also excellent!  Remaster of the SACD version is a lot like the RB rip of the hybrid, with added instrument decay and even better clarity.

Multi-channel SACD - Outstanding!  Some interesting room encompassing sound!  My favorite of the three!

Example:  Track 4 "Wish You Were Here" begins at the right rear, then their is a clearing of Gilmour's throat and a "snort" through the center channel, then it evolves across the front 3 channels.

This album makes me wish I had a matching front 3!

Hard to determine if I prefer this or Dark Side of the Moon?  They are different and both are excellent.

Hope you like it as much as I do!
Mark

PS:  On 4th listen the surround mix is outstanding!

Ted if you want to move this to the SACD review thread that's fine by me.

Thank you for the review.  UPS ground deliverd my copy to me at work this afternoon.  I will have to fire up the system and give the SACD multichannel a listen to this evening.

Got mine yesterday and listened through the surround mix from start to finish.  It definitely passes the goosebump test.

The surround mix on Welcome to the Machine turns the track into something like a movie sequence.  I mean that in a good way.  The grinding "THUNK" that kicks off the ending machine sequence scared the hell out of me.

As Mark said, the opening of WTWH with the scratchy radio megaphoning form the right rear and the acoustic guitar dead center is also pretty damn impressive.  Again it turns the track into a movie scene where you are in the room with a guy playing guitar to the radio.  Very cool.

This one definitely lives up to the hype.

I'm setting up a few listening nights at my place to spin the awesome 5.1 mix of Wish You Were Here.  If you're local to Southern California or visiting the area for the holidays, you are welcome to come by.  PM me and we'll make it happen.
