I'm enjoying this thread.  A lot of cool cans, but I wish there were more choices for the planar-magnetic or electrostatic type 'phones.  I ordered those Fostex just to see if I could hear any difference from my dynamic type Sennheiser HD-650's.  And I can't wait for eclein to get audio nervosa and buy the newest version from HiFiMan, and then I can buy his HE5-LE's. :icon_twisted:
I have not even received my Fostex yet, but I went ahead and ordered a pair of Shure ear pads because people say the standard ones are not comfortable. On those Thunderpants modified version, he is using either Denon ear pads, or Stax ear pads, and just those Stax pads are more than the cost of TWO of the Fostex cans.  That is insane just for the pads... :o

Lyndon if I sell I'll PM you first no problem.. :thumb:
Speaking of pads I'm due to receive the $20 leather earpads for my HE-5LE's, incredibly reasonable.
I'll most likely try the AT's I recommended earlier, they are in Headrooms Top 10, that and all the positive things I've read at Head-Fi...those are #1 next obsession phones...LOL.
Then I'd love to get the new Grado PS500's, in fact they might be next for me.....I love the look!!!
For $150 there are some excellent choices....if you go to a shop online that does phones check out all the ones that are in that area.....I have alot more to try and the fact that they are pretty reasonable means I can try a few different ones.....plus they weigh less than speakers!!!

I got a LCD flatscreen in the bedroom and now "Mama" sits up and watch Lifetime, Stories for Women until the wee hours and I need something comfy and good sounding to keep my sanity!

Well, if she's in the same room that rules out open headphones cause you can still hear the TV and she can hear your music if you turn them up.

Shure 840 or 940
Easy to drive and very good sounding ... amped or unamped ...I regret selling my 840s ... I practically gave them away ... 940s are better but 840s had warmth and magic that I have yet to find in 940s ...
Shure SRH940 Professional Reference Headphones
ATH-M50s are long time favorites ... can't go wrong with those

so which is YOUR fave of the 3?

Fostex T50RP, "semi-open"   does that simply mean that means it has a sort of permeable membrane or some sort of pressure resistance material between the back of the driver and the open atmosphere or am I over complicating/simplifying it... :|  I don't want Mama elbowing me when David Gilmour starts his guitar solo towards the end of Have a Cigar because of the sound!  8)

Some small holes that I believe enhance the bass response. If you don't get an answer here, I'd ask folks on the T50RP headfi thread...

Shure SRH-840,  $128.95

Audio Technica ATH-A7000  $122.99

Sennheiser HD280 Pro  $82.00

Fostex T50RP  $109.00

any actual users here of these 4 candidates?

Actually they are $75 shipped at B&H Photo right now.  Amazon is way over.
But midfi I would not put them in the running because I still believe comfort is big for bedroom phones. Nobody says these are comfy out of the box.
Look at the others AC members have mentioned for that.

eclein, that is a very good price for replacement pads.  I think those Stax pads are $60 to $80 alone.  Fake leather and foam?  Insane.

I liked the SRH-840s but sold them to return to open headphones. A nice all-arounder. Playback magazine's review of these was right on in my opinion.

My vote goes for the 840's as well. A nice all-rounder, it does scale nicely when amped.

Not sure I'd say my vote is for the 840s, not having heard the others. But yes a nice all-rounder.

If you have the patience for it, I'd say go the used headfi route once you've narrowed down your options, compare some headphones, then sell those you don't prefer.

Ah, looks like you made up your mind as I was typing. 840s are a very very solid choice.

I have the 940s - but 840s were my favorite ... I do miss them - 840s are so balanced ... warm and cozy ...
It comes with spare cushions - I'd recommend cutting out the foam from one of them - you will be literally lifting the veil ...

Dude I almost forgot that you have hifiman 5LE ... everything else you mentioned are several notches down ...

If anything you should look upward to LCD2/3 and Hifiman 6 / 500

LCD2 are warm side of neutral and Hifiman 500 are on the cool side of neutral - relatively speaking - both are reference level ... 500 retrieve more detail and 2's go lower
