BP26 blows fuse after a number of starts.
« on: 5 Nov 2011, 07:41 am »
hi to all and especially james tanner.
dear mr tanner i live in creta -Greece and i own a set of brystons.
my pre bp26 blows the fuse not on first startup but after some times ,maybe 20-30 times .I change the fuse with new one wich is exactly the same make and type.(littelfuse 1A 250V s.b.)
i noticed that some times on start up the wire inside the fuse bends a little.
is that bending normal behaviour ?  do i have current spikes from iec inlet plug? because i noticed small wear on metal of iec from plugin/unplugin  power cable?
please i need your help before i send unit to service.

regards .

Hi project

Sounds like an over voltage problem. Do you have access to a power condition or isolation transformer to test the theory?

Email Mike Pickett and maybe we can use a larger fuse.

I had the same problem with my Bp26 , and it was very frustrating .
Its because the Bp 26 is sent to Europe as a 220V version intstead of a 240V version . My outlet messure 230-235V .
It is however very easy to convert it to 240v .
Change place of the grey and the white wire from the transformer , and you convert it from 220v to 240v .

I recieved this when I contacted Bryston some time ago when I had problem with fuse blowing .

"We do recommend that all products in Norway be configured as 240V, and we've found that this does reduce the instance of nuisance fuse blowing and mechanical transformer noise.  Tor should be able to convert your unit to 240 very quickly and easily, with no parts required."

Maybe Mr. Tanner can confirm this  .

If such is the case, would it not make sense that all preamps / amps sent to such countries are setup from factory to run 240v?  This would minimize client issues and improve the customer experience, while at the same time result in less service calls/cost to Bryston...

Is Greece 240 Volt?

No - you have to set the voltage based on the official country requirements otherwise no electrical approvals.

in creta and to my area/town is constant 230 volts and at night goes up to 235 volts.
can i do that change on wires so transform to 240 ?

Gotch...it's the official voltage rating for certification vs. the voltage spikes in any specific locality....Torus is needed to smooth things out... :thumb:

In Norway the voltage is 230v-240v .
My outlets messure 230v to 235v and I blowed the fuse 10 times at least .
I did not bother to put the cover back on , because I knew I had to change a blown fuse soon .
After I converted the mps 2 to 240v the fuse problem was gone , and some transformer hum was also gone . The conversion was as simple as to switch two wires inside the mps2 .  Quite a few people on the Norwegian forum "Hifisentralen" in the thread "Brystons venner(friends)" had this problem and was able to fix it .
Get a confirmation from Bryston first .

also i forgot to mention that with correct voltage to primary i think -because of lower voltage to secondary wires the preamp IMHO sounds sweater and
more transparent.
any opinions about that ? ....mr tanner ?
