A friend of mine who plays jazz piano, has good ears and a good job needs to buy a new stereo from soup to nuts.  He asked for my advice because it was my stereo that opened his ears to the possibilities.  So tonight I took him to Sonic Spirits, which also doubles as Phil's apartment.  His rig for demonstration is the Resolution Audio cd player with Blue Circle pre-amp, amp, and power conditioner, all linked together with Audience Au24 cables.  He has matched this rig with Focus Audio speakers.  Tonight we listened to the 688 monitors and the 888 floorstanders.

We started with the 688's and were duly impressed.  Those little boxes deliver a spectacular soundscape with such great authority that it seems like some laws of physics must have been bent by the manufacturer.  It is the 888's, though, that just kill me.  They have a smoothness that easily rivals what I hear with my Meadowlark Blue Herons but there is no sense at any point that anything at the very highest frequencies has been left out.  What comes with that?  Imaging beyond compare.  I have never heard such a wonderful 3 dimensional presentation and I have listened to plenty of ridiculously priced gear.  Phil has found a nice synergy with his electronics and speakers.  Anyone who goes to the Home Entertainment Show 2004 in NYC will have a chance to hear the magic.  Phil has a room there.  Check it out!

I agree that the Focus 888's are extremely special speakers.  Quite quick sounding as well and the fit and finish are just superb.  Nice description, Daniel.

Thanks for the HE2004 plug, Daniel!  I posted something in the Market Square a few days ago describing what we'd be showing at HE2004...

Just came back from Phil's place and I must say that Daniel was spot-on in his assessment of the "Hocus Pocus Focus". Phil's living room is medium-sized but man, with those 888's, I felt like I was in a concert hall!
Really excellent imaging and soundstage with fantastic dynamics to boot :) A real 3-D experience!
For all of those who don't know about Phil-he is a great guy. Very laid back(like the focus) and a pleasure to deal with. Being in NY, I am so accustomed to pushy, snotty, and just plain-rude dealers here.  He is quite knowledgable about his equipment and offers a very relaxed no-pressure listening/buying experience. I strongly recommend anyone in the NY metro area to come check him out. Although he is moving to NJ, make sure you stop by his booth at HE2004. You will not be dissapointed.

thanks for the props, audioslave!  I'm not pushy or rude, but some might make an argument for snotty...

Sonic Spirits is down for a week due to the move, but I'll be back up in NJ next week.  See you at HE2004...!
