iCloud?
« on: 2 Nov 2011, 08:18 pm »
Has the question yet been asked as to whether "cloud storage" applies to music not purchased via iTunes store, and if so is there a particularly robust method to isolate selected tracks that one might want to use for remote demo purposes?

Also, are there limitations as to the resolution of stored music files?

I take it from the Apple site that purchased content is (currently) exempt from the 5G free storage, and it sure wouldn't take long to chew through many times that with only a score or so of AIFF or Apple Lossless tracks sourced elsewhere.

I don't think it's intended for us enthusiasts. For an additional few, you can get 25 GB of storage, and it'll match your music library at 256 Kbps.

I tnk iTunes match is terrible as a concept. Oh please can I pay for music I already own on an annual basis? Thanks! Back when apple opened the app store there was a program called simplify that plugged into iTunes and allowed you to stream from your own library from anywhere on an iPhone. No annual fee or anything like that. Oddly enough it quit working about 2 years ago.  I refuse to pay for something I already own.

It's probably a great solution for those that have borrowed music in their library, now you have a way to launder it via the iTunes Match.. or at least that's how I read it.

As for $25, there's not a lot of other services that allows you to stream your own content, and as for streaming it from your house, that can violate some ISPs terms and conditions for non-business subscribers.

I personally don't see a need for iTunes Match myself, but I can see how streaming solutions like pandora and the iTunes match can be useful.

That is what I want.  I want to be able to access any file on any of my computers from any capable device (remote computer, phone, pad).  Data usage be damned.  :D  there should be an app for that!

Not quite the same. Streaming and downloading files are not the same process. Simplify was great. You could stream from your library as well as friends. That was awesome.

It is not something I am interested in. I don't don't own any iTunes content and all my music is in higher quality than 256K AAC. I recently signed up for MOG, and listening to music I download that I don't own to my iPod Touch and iPad is much better. It costs more, but offers much more.

iTunes match is downloading of music files. Streaming just doesn't work for everyone. Streaming music at work is frowned upon using company resources and I currently am too cheap to have a wireless data plan.

Yahoo link would be cool.

Can you use Cloud and exclude the music component? I wouldn't mind taking it for a spin with contacts and calender.
I'll be using either Google or Apple  for cloud capabilities. Google is robust and a better solution for overall business purposes, but I'm having a slow learning curve.

You can simply set your PC up to stream (and control the compression, if any) via J. River Media Center.  Can access via a laptop, tablet or smartphone anywhere you have Internet access using J. River's Gizmo.  Easy to set-up, too.

For accessing all files, it's pretty easy to set-up your own "cloud" at home and access it anywhere.  For tons of storage, a simple solution is network attached storage or just add HDs to your PC (via more internal or an external HD array).  With the latter, you can set-up your computer to also be a server.  All this may sound somewhat complex, but it is actually very simple.

What I really want is to just access my files at work.  I tried remote access but failed.

sorry for the highjack, chrisby.

Simplify was THE application!
Worked over the internet and also over the 3g network
Taken over by Google and then stopped the same day!
So much for progress

sorry for the highjack, chrisby.

no worries,  my original query has been answered - I should be the one apologizing for possibly opening up a can o' worms  - unintended consequences and all that
