Anyone heard of, ever hear Tommy Bolin? Little know, but he had credentials. Played for the "James Gang" and "Deep Purple." Eventually he went solo and was just about to make it big, died suddenly from an overdose. Figures.

I need to toss up Jeff Beck.  Could be rock or jazz/fusion.  Just saw him Saturday night at a sold out show at the Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, courtesy of TONEAudio (thanks, Jeff!).  An amazing guitar virtuosos.

Too many to pick from in the general rock category.  Some favorites include; Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, SRV, Joe Walsh, Randy Rhodes, Duane Allman, Rickey Medlocke-Rossington-Collins (Lynyrd Skynyrd fame), Walter Becker, Ted Nugent, Mark Knopfler, Mike Campbell, Andrew Stockdale, Tony Iommi, Billy Gibbons, et al...

Buddy Miller gets my alt. country vote.  Great call on Waylon Jennings.

Kenreau,

I wasn't going to comment but you named some AWESOME guitarists.  I'd add Gilmour and Hendrix to your list but the names you mention are very solid.  I haven't seen Beck in a while and he is often left off the popular lists but he is as good as any of the greats.  An amazing talent and true artist who marches to his own drummer.

For country guitar, Albert Lee is my pick.  I have no idea how a Brit can pick it like Albert but his playing is a true gift.  He has a keen sense of melody and I can listen to his playing all day long.  Here is a snippet:

Okay, one more.  Brian Setzer never gets any mentions but he is one of my favorites. He's also great in concert.  Great player bustin' out the Hillbilly Jazz:

Of course. My fav is Teaser.

Joe Bonamassa is worth checking out as well.  I don't know where this guy came from.  I don't recall hearing of him until this past year, but the few clips I've seen of him are very impressive.  His tour & media agents have been working double time.  I get a steady stream of email flyers about his tours, merchandise, etc.

Delacroix

Of course. My fav is Teaser.

+1 for Tommy -- just read a bio (Touched by Magic)  which had me pulling out Private Eyes (fabulous) and Teaser, as well as the superbly remastered Come Taste the Band by Purple and Billy Cobham's Spectrum where he played up a storm.  "Greatest ever"? No, but then I don't think any one guitarist can be so described in any genre. Tommy is not heard much now which is a shame, his few recorded albums are all worth hearing just to understand how one guitarist can play across so many genres without losing his own identity. Shake the devil.....

Depending on how you define Folk Music, I'd have to say Doc Watson. Country music, no one comes even close, Merle Travis.

Rolling Stone Magazine reordered their famous (or infamous) list. Hendrix is still at number one. But there were some interesting changes.

Where's the Metal category?!?!

I have heard an awful lot of guitarists. I have yet to hear the ONE 'greatest guitarist ever within various genres'. There are guitarists that have a passion for the music and an identifiable tone, regardless of the genre they have chosen. Some also have incredible technical ability but are as musical as a typewriter. There is the sport of guitar playing and there is the art of guitar playing...both have their place, all depends on what floats your boat.

When I was a little kid, almost all I listened to was rock music. It was Steve Howe that introduced me to different styles of guitar playing when I first picked up the instrument. He wasn't the 'greatest', but a guitarist who can influence you to look at music in a different way is certainly very great.

Frank Zappa may be the greatest composer within various genres who played guitar, but he just happens to be a guy you can't lump into a category with everyone else. :)

Clapton, Satriani and Eddie should make your list.

Country - Merle Travis, Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant. Rock n' Roll - Bo Diddley.

Adrian Belew is one of my favorite guitarists.  in the supplied link he is playing a fretless highly modified Fender Mustang. Belew's co-lead guitar player Mr. Robert Fripp is no slouch either  :thumb:

too many good ones for me... Hendrix (ahead of his time), Page, Gilmour, Marr, Greenwood (insane!), Beck, Clapton, Rhodes (ditto), Hopkins, Murphy, and Hubert Sumlin who died earlier today... R.I.P.
