Buy CDs and rip.  Just for management of a music library, the BDP-1 + IPad is a bargain.

Warning :  The following post contains audiophile heresy.

Yep. One of the reasons I went ahead and upgraded my CDP recently in spite of all the hand-wringing about the death of the silver disc and the machines that spin them was the limited amount of downloadable music available vs. my need to enjoy a wide variety of music. I don't care how highly-resolved the sound is, I just don't want to listen to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours forever - there's too much other music out there to experience. The ongoing rape of the music consumer as we get pushed into another format change also sticks in my craw. You're paying how much for that download and in exchange, you get nothing that you can actually physically touch ? What a deal. Maybe the sound is so good that you can actually hear Stevie and Lindsay cutting up their blow in the studio but then again, maybe I don't care...I'm really tired of being a cash cow for the music industry.
I don't think there's going to be a sudden massive extinction of the CD overnight. I also don't think that some of those who are cheering on the death of Redbook ( not you, Redbook, the format :D ) have heard what the format is fully capable of. The playback devices which deliver to the fullest on the potential of the format are pricey, yes, but they are impressive to behold. And the SQ of the CD's ( in the right hands in terms of mastering etc. ) is getting better as well - heard any of the Redbook Pink Floyd reissues from this year yet? Not too shabby.
By the same token, I made damned good and sure that this time I bought a unit that offered some future-proofing as well in terms of digital ins and a potent DAC...so if it hits the fan, it hits the fan.

D.D.

I understand how you feel. In the last few (10?)  years the music industry has been wringing their hands about illegal downloads and in particular  about "music content rights". Remember  in the 70's-90's when they were changing formats every few years:  33 record,cassette,8 track, Mini disk, CD etc. During this time  if  you were to approach them  and say " Well I already own the content rights for Fleetwood Mac Rumours , because i bought the cassette format ,so  how about giving me a break now  and charge me only $6 for it in CD format" they would have laughed at you until they choked on their cigar smoke.

It is not just CDs.  Probably other physical media may go away as well.  Perhaps Blu-Ray is the studios last gasp at selling you physical copies of movies.

I remember reading recently that "spinning media" will go away, not necessarily physical media for playback.  Are chip based releases next?  In all seriousness, I think I saw in Best Buy a Beatles catalog on thumb drive.

You did - I have it and was one of the first I used when demonstrating the BDP-1 Digital Player.

James, regarding the end of bcd-1 in a few months I was wondering if ,during the years of production, have there been any small tweaks made along the way. In other  words if I purchase another one (spare) will it be the same or better than the one I bought two years ago?  Thanks ......... :?

So as an alternative digital offering I  hope Bryston will build a new dac with a preamp section. Maybe built around the newer dac chips( akm 4399 or ess chips), several per channel and overkill audiophile nervousa power supply. If you build it I will buy at least one and maybe two.
There is an explosion of these types of dacs on the market. If Bryston wants a piece of the pie they would have to do it in a timely fashion.

With the soon to be demise of the BCD-1,is there any chance that Bryston will go to the blue ray and DVD route?Just curious.Or maybe something like Oppo. All in one.

Hi Deftone,

I do not think so - they are such a commodity these days and are changing too rapidly.

Bryston is not that kind of company, imo. They do as they please. I appreciate them not following and conforming to the herd.
