What is the most likely problem to occur with the drive if not lasers? Will Bryston sell  a complete new drive unit as future insurance against breakdown.  I really love this CD-1 and want nothing else James.  Thanks for everyone's opinions and views on this topic. :inlove:

Yes we have complete drives in backup but usually a part replacement will suffice.

James , in view of all the anxiety (mine) do you think that Bryston would replace the BCD1 with SACD unit? :|

Hi,

No SACD is not really a large market and most of the drives we have looked at that will do SACD are DVD drives and have clocking frequencies that are not 44.1.  which is what you want for redbook CD's.

If you have a player like an Oppo that can pass 24 bit over HDMI (and it passes SACD converted to PCM at 88.2kHz) and take it into a DAC like a Bryston via an HDMI audio de-embedder (there's a whole thread in the Hi-Rez Music Circle), you probably won't want an SACD player.  I use it with my BDA-1 and have a modded Oppo BDP-83 and prefer going through the DAC.  I talked a friend out of an expensive ($3k) SACD player in favor of getting a de-embedder with his BDA-1.

Phil is absolutely right. Thanks to him, I bought the de-embedder (around $30 Or $40 on monoprice) and connected my old Oppo 970h to the BDA1 via HDMI. It all comes thru as 88.2kHz and sounds just great. Pick up any older Oppo for almost nothing (my 970 only cost about $160 NEW) and use it as a transport. You won't be dissapointed and if you are, you will not have laid very much money.

Well for those of us that still like to" put on a record and read the liner notes" I want to know if Bryston is going to give us a BCD-2. I bought the bcd1 as a my digital turntable and I think it's the living end. Sooooo. what other transports can I use with the BDA to achieve the sonic bliss I have (until Bryston gives up on us)? :icon_twisted:

Yes , the idea that my BCD-1 will become junk sucks big time. James said once that another drive could be installed if there is room. I think there's room, right? Let's explore the possibilities.

No worries. The BCD-1 is only afew years old and the BCD uses modified L1210 drive mech which Philips used to produce in HUUUUGGGEEEE numbers--- A friend of mine supplying parts to various electronic factories had 20,000+ units in stock as of last month...  So there'll be no difficulties at all finding spare parts at least for another 5 -- 10 yrs.

I'm using a Philips CD player + DAC that's TWENTY FOUR years old. Yet i'm not worrying.  :green:

btw, James, did philips stopped producing their higher end CDM drives as well? If not, maybe the more recent CDM models could become a nice alternative for a 'BCD mkII' .  The good old CDM seems able to last for-ever.  :icon_lol:

I got the BCD-1 when it first came out (I think the serial no. was 98) and after the DAC was out a bit picked it up and sold the BCD-1.  The announcement that the drives were no longer made was part of the reason, although a small one.  Another drive could always be used, although new software would be needed.  All transports are going to have a limitation on the life and probably at some point as with all moving parts may need some maintenance.  That's part of the reason why I prefer a DAC.

The moving parts, disc pick-up and drive mechs rarely break as whole, as those were just some very simple and robust electric rotors and gears . Some quick lubrication every few years is all you'll ever need.  Mine is almost 1/4 century old and still kicking.

However the rubber driving belts and for the loading tray and disc pick up arm etc. must be replaced over time because rubber parts perish with age---they will become loose and sticky after several years depending on working conditions and enviroments.  Replacement belts usually cost less than $2 and can be easily replaced by the user :green:

What about the laser itself? :dunno: I understand that they can burnout without a warning.

THE END OF CD MAY BE CLOSER THAN WE EXPECTED - perhaps 2012:

I'm sure some of us will make a run on the stores - as some had the forethought to do with vinyl.  I'm not getting rid of my CD's soon.
