You were wrong. You can get a TBI Millenia for $500.

Let me repeat it, I would have to spend more than I can afford to get a SS amp that could compete with a good tube amp...I think the kid forgets what circle this is.

No you don't. How much was your tube amp? The Millennia is the equivalent of a $7000 SET amp.

Get the 1.7's and enough amp to drive them.  They are on my list with a couple of SS mono blocks (which I already have).  I would love tubes, but, geez, I gotta budget.  Gotta ARC tube pre already and expect that will make nice.

As soon as I can be bothered to spend money on a camera better than the one in my phone, I'll take some pics of mine. They sound fabulous, of course, but they are also extremely nice to look at.

There hasn't been the slightest moment since their arrival where I wasn't astounded by the woodwork.

Peter Gunn does a GOOD service and he will be missed when he's gone.

Are you getting it directly from Kevin Deal of Upscale Audio?

Jim

Not that close to buying yet.  I don't have the room cleared out yet.  We have, at least, one dealer in Michigan, so I would probably go there.  If the right deal came around, I would not mind getting used.  I've never had a problem buying used in the past, although I would lean toward new.

John:

Maybe hit a few high end dealers and try things out and see what catches your ear....this will be a two fold thing, you will get to experience more options and at the same time build a familiarity with the dealers which can't hurt.

At the end of the day, you only need to please you and not us.

Thanks Jim,

Unfortunately, th nearest high end dealer, that I know of, is 200 mi away.  Before I buy, I'll take a little road trip to Detroit or Chicago and do some listening.

Ah, the joys of living in the boonies of Northern Michigan.

If you are wanting a SS amp that has a tube like sound, consider one of the avahif.com Synergy amps.  I have personally heard these in Mr. Van Alstine's home.  They are excellent amps.  Here is a review-
