ART Legato - best music playback software
« on: 7 Sep 2011, 08:59 am »
Recently bought a Legato USB/SPDIF converter from Pat at Analog Research-Technology and find the sound to be phenomenal, highly relaxed yet still very detailed (using an AD1865 dac).

I notice, however, that using Foobar (with WASAPI on Vista 64 bit) the music seems to stop playing randomly every five to ten minutes.  Does anyone know; (a) whether this has something do with the buffer length (currently set at 1000), or (b) if there is a better software package to use for music playback?

Too low of a buffer length setting can cause glitches, stuttering, etc. but doesn't normally completely stop playback, but you could try 2000ms and see if that makes any difference.

It may be another software program or process kicking in is causing it to stop, perhaps a particular screensaver or even an anti-virus program?

I have foobar, but only rev it up as a cross check if I'm having problems playing a particular file or something.  I never cared too much for the interface and prefer to use J. River Media Center.  It's a $50 program, but you can dowload it for a 30-day free trial and see how that works on your setup. (The totally free J. River Media Jukebox doesn't support WASAPI, ASIO or Kernel Streaming).

It might be some process hogging the system like a anti virus polling the internet for updates.

You can try
Windows Resource Monitor, look for processes peaking
DCP Latency checker
Let both run and watch what happens during the dropout

BTW: another J River fan boy here.
