My new "high end" turntable
« on: 12 Sep 2011, 01:25 am »
Drove by a yard sale on the way to church this morning and saw this:

Went back this afternoon and it was still there so after a little haggling with owner over price, I bought it along with a few 78s--Gershwin, Stravinsky (Firebird Suite). Not my normal listening pleasure but I needed some 78s to play. Everything works and the unit is in great shape. It is a Victor Orthophonic Victrola model VV 4-3 and the serial number tells me it was made in 1927.

Someone gave me a "book" of 78s. You can have them, PM me.

Up till Wednesday, I had a few boxes of 78's. Today they are sitting on a very large pile of garbage along with ALL my vinyl  I would have just given them to you.

That's a nice piece of history you grabbed.

Thanks Bill,

I am sorry to hear about your loss from the flood. My prayers are with you and your family.

Sweet snag Laura. If you want more 78s I can probably hook you up.    :thumb:

Here's wishing a speedy recovery from the damages & woes Bill.

That is a great find Laura  :thumb:
I've actually been keeping an eye out for something similar too.
Most I see over here have been badly treated, with copious quantities of paint applied in the past.
Yours looks very original and unmolested  8)

It is the original finish. I'm very fortunate to have stumbled on to it. I downloaded a copy of the operating manual and I have to buy some steel needles because the instructions say to change the needle after every play. Good thing they are available and relatively inexpensive.

That's a beautiful old record player.

I was going to ask if you need a horn to hook up to it. I just googled it and see that it has an internal horn. Just open the cabinet doors and you're good to go.
Very cool,
neo

Very nice. I like those with the big fancy horns too.
They usually don't come cheap.

Thanks guys.

Ed, the manuel says a 60 deg angle on the needle, not perpendicular.
