Viewing with HDTV
« on: 25 Dec 2010, 05:45 pm »
I purchased the Canon T2I with the intention to view photos on my 46" HDTV in 1080p. Using the camera connected by HDMI cable, I am able to view the photos. I can tell there is a significant difference in lighting detail viewed in HD.

The problem is I can't keep the photos stored on the camera indefinitely. Files transferred to my computer that is presently connected to HDTV, aren't displayed in HD. My laptop however is HD, so no problem there as I can store all my photos on that with 800 GB of memory available. Viewing the photos however is not as satisfying on the laptop as on the 46" HDTV.

I can transfer photos to DVD and view them through my universal dvd player that has jpeg connected by HDMI. The other option, I have another computer with a very good HD graphics card that I can view photos on a 24" monitor. But am having problems with that computer's OS.

Anyway I am just throwing the idea out there to discuss. Maybe someone has a better solution or idea for HD viewing of photos. :|

Here's an example:

When I took this picture I could see sparkles in the snow. That was what I was trying to capture. Viewed in HD the sparkles are more apparent, which was the intent of the photo. 8)

Okay, I burned a cd-r & dvd-r with HD photos. My universal player would not play the dvd in jpeg. It read the cd-r, but was very slow in loading the photos. Also the picture quality was worse than with the PC without HD capability.

I think the problem is not enough memory in the universal player. So I think the solution is a Blu-ray player that supports jpeg. Two Panasonic models BD-65 & BD-85 read jpeg in both cd-r & dvd-r. I couldn't find the memory size, but estimate about 2 GB based on other Blu-ray models that listed memory spec..

Won't know until I try, so I'll have to purchase a Blu-ray player. :|

There are a number of factors at work which could contribute to extra-sparkly snow.  For one, the pixels on the TV are much larger than on the computer screen, there may also be some sharpness and\or edge enhancement adjustments going on the TV.  Since the sparkles are most likely one or two pixels they may be interpolated as being lighter or darker depending on the size they are displayed at.

Can you put some kind of memory card into the TV?

Thanks for the reply!

I found the solution! :duh:
Silly me, unknown to me, not being familiar with laptop computers. I purchased one just recently that is HD Ready. It has a HDMI port which I thought was just for input.

So I went looking for the manual, which was on a system disk with much needed software. Reading about the HDMI I discovered that I could attach a secondary monitor. So after a few hours of tweaking I finally got my laptop set to clone, to duplicate the display at 1080i on the 46" HDTV. Problem solved and I am one happy camper!

As for the sparkles, from what I can tell the sparkles are lost when compressed from 18 megapixel jpeg. They show up in HD at full resolution. However zooming in too much the sparkles look like pixel artifacts. 8)
