Static On Clarinet Volume Control

My Clrinet gives a small amout of static when ever the stock volume pot.is moved.It is almost a year old.Should I use Deoxit on it?

Normal, no. Possible, yes, especially if you use the pot specified in the instructions. Those pots are pretty cheap. Also the less you use it the worse it is, since you don't take advantage of the normal wiping action. If you live in a dry climate it seems to make things worse.

I am sure you can easily clean it, as others have pointed out, but this seems like an opportunity to get that nifty stepped attenuator you were thinking about!  :)

The problem with putting a stepped attenuator in is that I have a nice drilled chassis front panel that I don't want to replace.Could I fit one in and not have to replace the front panel?

One idea is to remove the existing pot, plug the hole, and install the attenuator somewhere else, either above or below the horizontal line where the existing pot is situated. You have to decide if it can be made to look right to you. Perhaps a large knob might make the offset location look intentional.

However, I would just clean the existing pot first. You may find that this is all is needed.

I just had laser etching of the front panel with the print downloaded from this site that has the Hagerman logo and all.It looks wondeful,so I will be cleaning the pot.It is not that bad anyway.
