For those who do not leave their amplifiers on, I thought you might find it interesting to know what you are actually saving per month.  Some specs and prices:

Power consumption at idle
1 X Bryston 4BSST2 - 170W
2 X Bryston 7BSST2 - 430W

Cost of Electricity 2010
Average in U.S. - $.105 per kwh
New York - $.171 per kwh
California - $.157 per kwh
Kansas -    $.087 per kwh

If you calculate 8 hours listening time / 16 hours idle time per day, the cost of the idle time would be:

1 X 4BSST2 - $13.95/month in NY, $12.81/month in CA, $ 7.10/month in KN
2 X 7BSST2 - $35.30/month in NY, $32.40/month in CA, $17.96/month in KN

That is *SO CHEAP*...
Electricity here is about € 0.24 per kwh. Or about us$ 0.30.
I am not even going to start on gas prices...

But you don't need that much either. You don't have to heat a 4,000 sq.ft. house made out of cardboard. And you don't need to drive a SUV so you could fit your 4 fatso kids and their hamburgers, chips and coke.

Very, very true.
I live in an extremely well insulated house, even in blizzard conditions the temperature at night (when we turn the heater to 15 C) never drops more than 3 degrees. I only have 2 kids, both skinny as a nail, who both detest McD. And I drive a Toyota Camry. Which isn't cheap in gas use, but still better than a SUV...
Still... It's ridiculously expensive (just like everything here is... I *SO* want to move back to Toronto...)

Ah but there are so much more to our electricity charges - only prices for Kwh was quoted.

We have an electricity delivery charge, a debt pay down charge, a consumption charge and now a 13% overall tax starting in July on our total electrical bill.

Want to move to Toronto? Be careful what you wish for

Be well...

Same here, we also pay for the cable, the connection, the delivery, and of course the government rips us off big time by almost tripling the actual price through taxes.

Already lived there, and NEVER should have left. Stupid job...

Can't say that I notice any change. I usually fire everything up after I have my nap ( I need to unwind first after being all hyped up from driving). Then I surf the net, then I spin some tunes and watch silent TV.
I start with the volume around 85 db. After a few minutes my ears having adjusted, I crank 'er up to 92-95 db range and it sounds pretty darn good. :smoke:

Take care, eh?

As an old bag who has had a LOT of different stereo equipment over the years, I can say IMO that equipment does in fact sound better after about an hour, give or take fifteen minutes. AND that it still sounds even slightly better yet after being left on a day. give or take six hours.
This has become MORE true as stuff has gotten better, since the 1980s...
i used to leave everything on all the time. My old Forte' 4a fifty watts/ch space heater cost about $10 U.S. a month to keep on all the time.
With an eye to conservation, i often turn off the stuff if i am not gonna listen within eight hours. Since I retired, this is not at all that often.
My old Forte was far more obvious about next day better than my new Bryston 4B-SST2 is.
Since I basically Only listen to music all day.. and all evening with only a few hours of TV if any, the stereo is on all the waking hours.

Those guys know how to take the fun out of stereo listening.

According to their max. exposure chart at 91-94 db I should only listen for 1 hour at these spl.  Yet I've been listening at these volumes for at least 10 years for more than 1 hour a day. I should be deaf by know don't you think?

Dunno Mag but according to them it's as loud as if you would be running a lawn mower in your room. You want to be able to listen to music for many more years, don't you?

When I'm not listening to music I try to limit exposure to noise pollution, I just sit in the quiet . If I'm running a lawn mower (I no longer have a lawn :thumb:) or snowthrower,I wear earplugs. There is something about mechanical noises that is very irratating on the ears.

Road noise is my biggest concern as I usually have the window open when driving. And it never fails you get an air brake release right in your ear. I think if I experience hearing loss in my left ear I'll attribute it to this and not stereo listening.

IMO most people are unaware of noise pollution in their daily lives. They are not aware that it can effect your mood in a negative way. Once you become aware, then you may learn to appreciate the sound of silence, as much as artistry of some types of music. 8)

Usually takes 45 minutes to an hour for the gear to come up to optimum running temp. The sound will open up a bit and be less strident.
Over the years I found NO advantage of leaving gear on. With ONE exception DIGITAL.
