Its a philips PM3207.  Is it usable for audio?  I have no idea how to use it.

If you do a google search, you will come up with a lot of very useful information on using a scope for audio. What you have will work just fine but make sure you obtain some knowledge before sticking probes into your electronics.

First thing you will want to do is calibrate it.

Once you master it, it will become your best friend as you venture into circuit design.

+1 on what Bill said about poking around.  HV tube stuff can definitely be lethal without the right precautions, probes, etc.

Now you need to look for a nice cheapo function generator   I got an old Wavetek 130 for about $30 on eBay.  Works great and is built like a tank.  Lots of good similar ones around.  Of course you can generate signals from CD or PC sound gen but it's a pain for me on the bench.  I do it the old way, get lots of output too.

Dan I will take you up on that for sure.

Thanks for the info guys.  I am pretty comfortable with instrumentation so this should be fun.

Another thing to look out for is the "bug". The scope is only the first step, then a function generator, then bench top meters............ next thing you know, you'll end up with benches full of test gear :duh:

Which then turns into an addiction.. I had to remodel my bench to accommodate the ever growing collection..

Here's a service manual for it.  The site is a little quirky, but can be worked through without much trouble.  It is a multipart file, so download all parts before decompressing.

Hopefully it will also have a bit of a user guide, too.

After reading the subject line and nothing else, I just have to ask. . . is your friend a doctor?  Which end?

(sorry. . .couldn't resist)
