My wife, my son and I just got back from seeing Sherlock Holmes.  We all thought the movie was very good.  It had some great action scenes and sometimes I found myself thinking about sleep, meaning there were some slow parts.  I asked my wife and son for their comments as soon as we got back into the car.  They both said they would watch it again on DVD and gave it 3.5 stars out of 5.  Oh, we went to the first showing at the theater and there were only a few empty seats!

I will be interested to read your comments.

How was the actual storyline? Your reaction of "slow" hit home as this was an impression(fear) of mine from just seeing the commerials. I was hoping a strong storyline would make up for a few slow moments? Thanks.

Robin:

Typical Sherlock Holmes style, everything is explained at the end.  I think the story-line was very good.  The movie, in my estimation, could have been 15 minutes shorter but it is definitely worth seeing.  The scenery and acting is very good.  I may have been tough with my rating of 3.5 stars out of 5 but it takes a very special movie for me to assign 4 stars or better.  This movie is very close, like almost there, very very good, but not great!

Well the only reason I'm asking is that I'm searching for a 2nd movie to follow Avatar for an afternoon doubleheader matinee. It'll need to be fairly strong movie so I truely won't fall asleep after nearly 3 hours with Avatar.
Sounds like Sherlock Holmes will suffice, I do like Robert Downey Jr. a lot, (still patiently awaiting the followup to Ironman). :hyper:

Downey Jr. was very good in the movie. I found him to be better than the movie itself but it kept my interest and I enjoyed his performance. 3 out of 5 stars for me.

Hey Robin,

The first half of the movie you wouldn't know what it's all about (thin I kind of got sleepy).  Then, somewhere in the mididle, this Lord (think it's a lord) came out of somewhere (wouldn't say nowhere) to try to usurp power.....  Then, Sherlock and Watson came alive.  Until that point, what's that guy's name ???? Strong shows up, you wouldn't miss much.  Not going to give away the whole story.  I would give it no more than 3 stars.

Downey Jr. has always been a very good actor.  He likely will cop an Oscar nomination.  But, I doubt he'll hit bull's eye.  Bridges I have the money on.

I felt the same way.  The movie was good, Downey Jr. was superb.

The movie didn't knock my socks off and I wouldn't put it up for best of year, but I enjoyed it.

The rub I had with the movie, and this could have been the theater, was that it was so freaking loud.   It was miserably loud in parts and yet the dialogue was still not exactly clear.  I really dislike this trend in movies.

It must be the theatres' setup ..... or lock of it perhaps.
Sound was fine where I saw it but picture Q could have been better.
I saw Avatar and S.H in two different theaters. The sound and picture quality was quite noticeable between the two.

As to the movie, ....... not bad. Actually, I realy enjoyed it.
It was kept pretty close to the spirit of the original S.H adventures.
Acting was good to excellent. Overall - nicely balanced with smell and feel of the era as well as the London itself. Grainy/washed out look of the movie didn't hurt either.

I liked it and recommended it.

**** stars

Maybe it was because I was tired when I went to see this movie, but I didn't enjoy it all that much.  I thought the individual scenes were extremely well-acted, the look/cinematography was excellent...but overall the movie just seemed to move at a very awkward pace.  The whole mystic/black-magic part of the film was not convincing to me, so it never felt like Holmes/Watson were ever in that much danger.

You accurately described how I felt when I left after seeing the movie on Christmas Day!

I'm hoping that there's a "Director's Cut" version released on DVD, because it seemed like there was a lot of really good stuff in this film that just didn't get put together well in the final edit...I'm guessing that with more time to edit the film, it could turn out really great...

I agree Phil, more time editing will make this a 3/5 film to a 4/5.
