Sennheiser HD800 and Grado HF-2
« on: 27 May 2009, 11:56 pm »
I received my tracking number for my HD800.  They arrive on Friday as I leave for CanJam.  I've been told my HF-2 will be waiting for me when I arrive at CanJam.  Thanks to Todd at Todd The Vinyl Junkie for both.

I will post some impressions from CanJam if I can, otherwise, next week.

Will they make it in time for you to bring them to CJ?  If so, I would love to hear them again.  My pair isn't going to make it in time for me to bring them, argh...

Both TTVJ and Headroom will have the HD800 available.  TTVJ will also have the HF-2.

As far as hangover relief is concerned, there is no question it will be needed.

Yeah, I am going to have a chat with Senn at the show, so I'm sure I'll get a chance to hear them.

Ultrasone is supposed to loan us an ED8 for a while at the show, since my set did not make it in time.

See you all this weekend.

I've sold off my HD800's despite loving them.  I bought a JHAudio JH-13 Pro custom iem after hearing the demo at CanJam and with the HF-2, which are going to terminated with a 4 pin xlr for use with a balanced amp I am having built, something had to give.  I've been listening to my speaker rig about 90% of the time so I wanted to pull some money out of my headphone rig to accomplish this.

The HD800 are one of the better headphones I've heard and well worth the asking price.  They are very revealing so if the recording is bad, you will know it.  I've used them with a bunch of different amps and they do well with tubes and solid state alike.

For the money, the HF-2's are a bargain.  They are like baby PS-1's and maybe better as they don't have the sometimes boomy bass of the PS-1.  I'm hoping balanced will take them up a notch.

Since I mentioned them, the JH-13 Pro is made by a company started by Jerry Harvey of Ultimate Ears fame.  He has his own company now and his offerings are excellent.  The JH-13 Pro is as good as an IEM gets.  Sometimes I find my self with them in using my iphone and feel no need to put on my speaker or other headphone rig.

I FINALLY got my HD800's today, they are pretty spiffy.  I am going to let them burn in for a while before forming any impressions.  I'll try and snap a couple of pics soon.

I also got my ED8's in on Tuesday (FINALLY!), so they are in burn in mode as well.  Here they are straddling one of the little Miniwatt amps that I got from Mariusz:

It's been a crazy headphone week here, ha!

I'm thinking a balanced M3.  I have a Beta 22 single ended that was built by a friend.  He did a great job so I raised the idea of doing an M3 and he said he was thinking of doing one for himself.  At least this is the plan.  The idea to go balanced with my headphone rig came from a desire to balance my speaker rig. I'm thinking of moving my tt to a spot next to me in my music room.  It will be about 6 or 7' run of cable so I felt xlr's would be the way to go.  I have a McCormack DNA-1 Deluxe Rev. A and a pair of Odyssey Stratos monos all of which have balanced inputs.  Next is looking for a preamp and phono preamp to go with them.

Congrats on the new cans.  I'm not an Ultrasone fan, had the ED9 and gave it up when I realized the bass was so boomy it was starting to hurt my ears.  The HD800 is a different beast altogether.  I think you will enjoy it.

By the way, it looks like we are bringing CanJam to RMAF this year.  If you have any interest, contact Jp.  I won't make as I'm in Vegas with my wife that weekend.

Yeah, the Ultrasone ED9 is a polarizing can, people love it or hate it.  They sound much different re-cabled and balanced than stock, which my set of 9's is.

Cool on the M3!

Jude contacted me already about the RMAF/CanJam show.  I will be at RMAF, exhibiting as I always do with Sonicweld, so I can't do both, and the "speaker audiophile" portion of the show is quite important to my business.  However, I am pressuring Craig from Whiplash Audio to show at the CanJam portion of RMAF so he can show the new Sonicweld Decoder.

I think it's a great idea for CanJam to have a presence at RMAF.  This alliance will allow much greater exposure for the headphone niche to a significant number of audiophiles who may not be aware of just how good a top flite headphone system can be.  Which, is very good, indeed.

Peace,

Lee

Nice!  I like the size contrast with Justin's little Pico on top.

I have accumulated WAY too many high end dynamic cans, I need help.      I need to thin the herd a bit one of these days...

That was my office rig.  I used the b22 for my office speakers.  I decided that it was a waste not to use it as a headphone amp so I brought it home.  At the moment, I'm using a Sonic T-Amp with the Pico DAC in the office.  Eventually, I will pick up an integrated amp for the office.
