One of the best ways to portray that quality is through the use of EL84's. Other adjectives that come to mind include: Liquid, smooth, easy to listen to and even sensual. Music flows around the listener. It's not aggressive or harsh. You will notice a control on the front. That's for a circuit I designed called Variable Negative Feedback. I made it so you can contour the amplifier to your speakers. Not too many amplifiers have such a feature. Normally people are stuck with what the amp puts out. Now you have the power to mold the amp into your system. The NS-3 produces three watts per channel of class A power that's ideal for speakers 95db sensitive and up. You will NOT find a better amplifier for horn loaded speakers. The Chicken does volume control or gain?

Hello-

The knob is for adjusting negative feedback. It doesn't control volume. If it were a volume control, the amp would be integrated- but I opted for the feedback control instead. The good news: It can be made into an integrated amp!

Just curious, How many dB is the feedback variation min-to-max?  Do you compensate for that gain change with a second pot on the same shaft, or does the overall closed loop gain change accordingly?

The feedback goes from near zero to about -20. There are no gain adjustment pots ganged with the feedback control for compensation. The amplifier will arrive with the gain control pre-calibrated at the 12 O'Clock position for best performance.

Ideal for efficient speakers in the 95db and up range. That includes horns, many single driver systems and such. To insure a perfect fit in your system, variable negative feedback was installed.

This is a fun to use amplifier! It's gentle on the tubes, produces so little heat it's not worth mentioning and does carry a vintage El84 tone signature: Smooth, organic, flowing, not in your face. It's an amplifier to relax with.  If you're into vocals, the midrange is impeccable! Lows and highs are smooth as silk.

I can guarantee there is no better amp for classic single ended EL84 tone- straight from the 50's and 60's.

If you would like a bigger rendition- that can be done as well. We have a 40lb transformer package that's used with the NS-10.   
Instead of using a single El84, they can be paralleled. Sound quality is not sacrificed and the wattage is increased.
