Cornet 2 Build - Splitting into 2 chassis
« on: 16 Jul 2009, 08:15 pm »
I am just about to embark on the build of my Cornet2  :D.  I am now building the two chassis out of wood, yes, I said 2 chassis.  I want to separate the power supply section from the phono preamp section in the hopes that it will reduce noise.  It may be overkill but what the heck, let's see what turns out.

My question is this;
Which parts, or should I say up to which point of the kit, should be allocated in the power supply chassis?  I have some ideas of my own, but if anyone has done this and has some experience in it, that would be great (Jim, your input on this would be appreciated too).  Separating the supply does allow me to split the two at any point after rectification or the filtering section, so it would be interesting to hear opinions on this.

I will be wiring the power supply in point-to-point fashion and then using the PCB for the main preamp, thus leaving a portion of the power supply section unpopulated.

I hope to offer some photos when all is done.  Thanks.

This sounds like the approach I was planning to take.  Bread board the P/S and use the Hagerman board in the satellite piece.

I was planning to use power line wires of 14 gauge oxygen free copper, twisted, and shielded.  I was planning to put the transformer in one corner and run the Rectifier B+ and H+ on the opposite far corner in a big case so I could fit two power supplies there....  One for my Cornet 2 and the other for a Clarinet.

You might want to use a choke based power supply as Jim designed in the Castinet and the Trumpet.

Good luck and let us know how you like it!

Looks like I am going to split the supply and preamp chassis just after C103 and C106.

This way the supplies have been rectified and filtered into DC thus should not radiate any noise.  Or so is the hope. :?

There used to be a picture of the old cornet board cut into two sections on the Hagtech website.  Not sure if it was ever made into a working machine or not.  Would make a dinky little phono stage with the chopped down board.

Interested to see where your project goes - hope it proves a success for you.

I never did see that picture.  I know Jim's complete unit is in two chassis and of course the board is smaller.  In my case there will be a lot of empty space in the back half of the preamp chassis.  So it will be a rather large looking chassis with just the 3 tubes on top.  Not too concerned about the size.
I am making the chassis out of wood, almost done making that now, so soon will start on populating the components.  Probably should start taking some photos before I go any further in the build.

Make the split at R220 and R223.
