Resistor mod needed on Cornet to run directly into amp?

Hi All,

I have been enjoying my Cornet and have been able to reduce the hum.  I have been auditioning new amps lately and have been told that a resistor mod was needed to get the Cornet to sound the best with a standalone amp.  The amp has a volume control so I am not sure if it is necessary or not.  I believe Jim has explained this before but I did a search and couldn't find anything.  If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks much!

Let me slide in here with a question about how you reduced hum.

I don't remember any CORNET2 modification.  Just that it helps to keep the loading of the volume control at 10k ohms and higher.

Thanks for the Reply Jim.

I just remember tubesforever mentioning something.  I have the original Cornet though, with CCS mod.  Would there be anything you suggest to make sure I am getting the best sound possible running it directly into an amp.  Right now I am trying out the Eico HF 87 amp.

Also, how would I know if the volume control loading was about 10K?  I apologize for being so new with all this stuff.

Thank you,
Clipper

Let me slide in here with a question about how you reduced hum.

I ran some jumper cables from a screw on the transformer to a metal board sitting underneath the Cornet.  I also ran some jumper cables from tube shields over the 12AX7s to a couple scews on the chassis.  That seemed to help quiet it down a bit.

I have ordered a couple tube shields. I will wrap/seal them with copper film[faraday cage]. They will screw down to the chassis, which is grounded. Crazy how this tiny bit of hum can nag.
