Quick thanks to J. Salk.
« on: 21 Apr 2009, 05:36 pm »
As some members may know, I was interested in auditioning some Salk speakers in the greater Cleveland, Ohio area. Since none had been sold in the area, Jim suggested that I make the trip up to the Detroit area to listen to them. Plans were made and my oldest son and I made the trip yesterday.

I just wanted to shout out a thank-you to Jim for his gracious hospitality. I was already fairly certain these were the speakers I wanted prior to my visit. I must honestly say that I was sold thirty seconds into the demo. I must imagine that I had that "deer in the headlights look", as I was totally in awe. We hung out for a couple of hours, listening to various demo tracks on several speakers.

I must say, that I learned more about speakers in my brief time with Jim than I could have researched in months. The passion and pride he has in them is so evident and genuine, almost like a proud father talking about his children.

Needless to say, I did place an order. Now the arduous wait for my five speaker system based on the Songtower RT begins. I hope the time goes fast but the reward I already know will be sweet. It's nice to see that American craftsmanship is alive and well, quite well in Jim's case.

Thanks again Jim for taking time out of your schedule for my son and I. It was a real pleasure meeting you.

  Bob.

Thanks for the very kind words.  Much appreciated.

And believe me when I say the pleasure was all mine.  A little time away from the shop is always appreciated and to make good friends in the process just adds to the experience.

We'll get right to work on your project so your wait will be as short as possible.

- Jim

Just curious as to whether you were able to compare the ST domes witht the STRT's.

Unfortunately, I was not. This may have been due to the fact that I wished to listen to both the Songtowers and the HT-2 TL's. Since the HT-2's employ the ribbon tweeters, perhaps Jim thought this was the best comparision. Also, in fairness to Jim, we demo'd the speakers at his home, where he obviously doesn't have his entire inventory at his disposal.

He did note however, that the domes were nearly as good in most instances. In my case, they would have probably exceeded my expectations, but since I demo'd the ribbons, I went that route. I was originally leaning towards the HT-2 TL's for a five channel system. Jim noted that, in his opinion, they were somewhat overkill for home theater. When my checkbook recovers and I do go the dedicated two channel route, I already know what speakers will be it's focal point.

This is such an awesome BBS. Not only do regular guys get to converse with the owner of the company, they get to converse with the designer of the product. I don't think I've ever seen this kind of close support in anything else, period.

  Best Regards, Bob.

Congrats and welcome to the family.

Thanks Nuance, in more ways than one. Your thread at AVS was what got me interested in the Salk line to begin with.

As fate would have it, the pair of Songtower's I demo'd were the sisters to yours according to Jim. I must say, even your hi-rez pics did not do them justice. The hand rubbed Rosewood was in a word, breathtaking. They rivalled the finest furniture I've ever seen.

Hey--we're all working stiffs.  But after 6:00 at night, I get to do stuff that isn't work.  Trying to make music sound right is a pure pleasure.  And being able to talk with others who appreciate hearing music come out of a box is an even bigger pleasure.

No need for that.  And certainly no offense.  I just thought you were being a bit too deferential.
