The D40 is a great camera, but definitely skip the 18-55mm kit lens. I'm really impressed with the 18-105mm VR lens that comes with the D90 kit; build and image quality are much better than the plasticky 18-55. You could probably buy one cheap on craigslist from someone who bought the D90 kit when it first came out but has no need for that lens. To tell you the truth, I hardly ever even bother putting my 50mm 1.8 lens on... I use the 18-105 about 90% of the time (my other lenses are 105mm vr, sigma 18-50mm hsm ex and 70-300mm vr).

As long as you don't mind the small screen, lower resolution, and reliance on AF-S lenses the only real drawback of the D40 is the near complete lack of control buttons on the back. Now that I'm used to being able to change white balance, exposure, ISO, etc. with just a few presses I would hate to go back to dealing with menus for everything. It's a great camera to start with though because you can leave it in full auto mode and still get very good results.

Thanks for the reinforcement on the D40. I will get the D40, upgrade to the 50mm 1.4 AFS, and have the kit lens as back up.

RE: Ice cream girl photo: I was just standing above her....I am 5'9", so I guess about 5 feet, given bending to view through the viewfinder. Thanks on the compliment.

As you know a 24mm on a DX crop sensor is approx to 36mm on full sensor/film. To me, the 28 or 30mm would be the closest to a real standard lens.
I use my 24 more than my 50 and 85. I recently rented a 17-55 f2.8 and used the wide end much more than the 55 end for a reception- a great lens!.  But I can't afford to own it. BTW I am just a hobbyist.

below is @17mm on a 17-55 f2.8, on D80 , distance about 5-6ft.
