Why are you downgrading to a Benchmark?

Looking for a tad more detailed sound (my old drummer's ears are just not what they used to be). Thinking I could get rid of my preamp, too. Also figured I can use my cheap old Sony NS500V as a transport and be able to listen to the few SACDs I own without having to use two players.

What makes you say this would be a downgrade?

You do realize the Benchmark will not pass the SACD through, right?

If you use the preamp function, the BM will pass through the SACD from the player.

I had the regular Benchmark DAC1, had a Musical Fidelity tube buffer and a cheap CD player. So I had 3 power cords and 6 interconnects.

I switched to the Rega Saturn and have been happy. Looks like I went exactly in the opposite direction! But getting rid of the preamplifier with the Benchmark could be a definite advantage!

Yes, I would just use the Sony's analog outs for the few SACD's in my collection.

Actually, I owned the first generation DAC 1 and found it to be somewhat uninvolving; I ended up buying a used Sony SCD-1 for dirt cheap and liked it better. The system has completely changed since then, with a different CD player, different amps, preamp and speakers. The DAC1 is also not the same unit as it used to be either. I guess I'm curious, especially in light of the recent glowing feedback on the new DAC1 in TAS and elsewhere.
