VPI Aries 3 with Gingko Cloud 11
« on: 30 Oct 2008, 07:35 pm »
AliG loaned me his Gingko Cloud 11 isolation platform to try under my VPI Aries 3 turntable.  I was amazed at the difference that it made.   The background was blacker, the pops and clicks were greatly reduced and the voices and instruments crystallized out of the fog.   I can also play music at a much higher level without distortion.   As Michael Fremer says, "the difference wasn’t subtle" .

I have a greatest hits album by Ray Charles and with my old Nottingham Horizon turntable with an AT OC9 cartridge; it sounded OK but not great.  Playing it on my Aries 3 on the Cloud with the same cartridge, it almost brings me to tears because it is so beautiful.

Fsimms,
While I don't have the Gingko Cloud I found the same experiance with a sandbox.
The sandbox is filled with 75 lbs of sand with a 3" thick platform. I found that tables with no suspension need isolation of some sort. I have a scoutmaster and before I placed it on the sandbox I experianced the same problems. Like you said blacker backgrounds, low level detail comes thru, bass cleaner.

I love the Gingko Cloud 11 under my Scoutmaster.  Best of all the tweaks, even better than the Super Platter.

Tom,
Did you actualy try the Super Platter on your Scoutmaster? I'm serious thinking about getting it.

Good news, for you to notice the improvement you mentioned in "pops and clicks" you must have had some serious isolation issues I suspect.

Nothing like a good tweek to make things that much better !!

I do have the Super Platter.  I need to update my system info and pics.  The Super Platter did improve the sound greatly. Bass is much tighter and backgrounds much quieter.

I should probably rephrase my statement on the Gingko.  For the money, the Gingko was the best upgrade for the Scoutmaster.  The Super Platter is a great upgrade but will run you $1,200.00

Hope this helps.

I did the sandbox as well as the Ginko Cloud on the same table with the same arm. The Ginko is better in almost everyway but cost. I might add that there are a couple tricks to make the Ginko sound better yet.
