I basically want to screw a pair of drivers to a piece of wood and hook it up to a T-amp and an Ipod shuffle. Any suggestions?

Are you going to carry this around on your shoulder? If so, the 15's may be a little large

Yes they can, but what T amp are you specifically referring to?  On the cheap side I'd go with used car audio speakers

Yes, but they are not going to boom by themselves.

What exactly do you mean by "boom"?

won't boom (have good bass) unless you use one or more very large drivers. The Hawthorns are the way to go.

The Hawthorne's are the only drivers I know of that you can throw on a piece of wood and have them sound good, all the others I know of take a little more work and usually need bass helper drivers.

will the visaton run open baffle sound better than a boombox? I have the sonic impact 2nd gen t-amp. what if I have to box them? any cheap enclosure solutions. this will basically reside on a desktop or in the kitchen.

In this application for a little more than the price of a pair of B200s I would try something like these:

Getting a decent bass from small OB and the super-T is going to be hard.  And I should know!  You can get great midrange, tho...

I would go with one of those designs linked to in the post above.

Micheal,

Do you have any experience or thoughts with the DIY Paradise Charlize?

Some people have liked a B-200 stand alone on large baffles.
I have a B-200 on an 18" wide baffle.  I would find this unlistenable without a large helper woofer.
Even then the driver is peaky and needs equalization of some sort.

Since you want this on a desktop, I think you will want a smallish baffle, and thus you will have no bass below 150Hz and it will not sound good.
I drive the B-200 with a Clari-t(a modified T-amp).  I can get 90db @ 10 feet no problem.  It is plenty loud.

You might want to take a look at this link.

Those Fritzspeakers might be nice.  They look like some older Omega speaker designs.  The Omega line is now more money.

A little OT, but yes, the DIY Paradise Charlize is a very nice amp.

The original is basically the Tripath eval board rearranged.  It works well.
I have not heard the new version, but have been told it is even better.
The TA2020 is probably my favorite Tripath chip.
