You might try a helper woofer driven by a plate amp.
For me, the naturalness of OB bass, especially on drums....good stuff...

I may indeed add a woofer in the bottom. Since I'm using an active XO (my other speakers are actively biamped) I can use the Rotel for the woofs, it will do 400W/4R, should be sufficient. I do like the bass I'm getting and while it doesn't go real deep it's not too bad either. Need to get the measurement rig setup and see what I have.

I remembered this morning that I have a pair of Vifa PL22WR-09-08 woofers gathering dust. Looking at the specs the Qts is only .34, so probably not suitable to add as a "helper" woofer as Brad puts but I could be wrong. Any thoughts?

I think you should pick up some of Danny's new woofers and try them in an OB frame.

Glad to have assisted somewhat.

The Vifa might be a bit to 'little' with an X-max of 4 mm. If you are going to measure I think you will get a good picture of what is needed in bassassistance.

Agree that the Vifa though free, is likely not the best driver for OB bass.

I would look for something with more swept area (12, 15, 18?), a slightly higher QTS (0.6-1.0), more XMAX (10 would be nice, more is generally better), and with a similar FS - the Vifa's 27 is good.

You might be surprised where you can find some good bass drivers - I find that car audio holds a number of good candidates - all the dual voice coil drivers can be used with one coil left open, and this doubles the effective QTS - I have done this with good success for years now...

I do second the Danny 15's though... they look very very tasty!

If I didn't already have them, I would take a good look at Danny's new OB woofers with custom amp.

Ya, I went and read up on Danny's new drivers and amp and that sure looks to be a sweet setup. Wish I had some extra $$ to drop on some new toys. Well I do but I've already earmarked it (and got my wife's buy in) for another project. Who knows, maybe I can sell some of the junk sitting around here.

Danny Ritchie of GR Research. He is working with Brian Ding of Rythmik Audio. Danny has a new driver that works in conjunction with the Rythmik servo amp and is designed for use in an open baffle.
