Squeezebox Help Needed
« on: 19 Feb 2008, 01:32 am »
My old Microsoft Router died and I replaced it today with a new D-Link Dir-655 Xtreme N Router. Signal strength from this new unit is excellent and I am currently connected by wireless on my laptop computer.  I am typing this as I look at my S3 that is approximately 8 feet away and will connect to the wireless network.

With the new router I changed my wireless network name, left 64 bit encrypton and changed the wireless wep key code.  The S3 does not pick-up the new wireless network.  It worked fine with the old router until it died.  My computer is indicating that I have excellent connection speed and an excellent signal.

Can anyone instruct me on what I should check or how to correct this problem?

Thanks,

Ken

If the SB3 can't see your new router, then perhaps your router is not broadcasting.  Either supply the name directly with the SB3 or setup your router to broadcast its availability.

ps: once setup, turn off the broadcasting.

I'd go through the whole setup with the SB3 again.  Do it manually (right arrow, etc.).  Type in the network name if you have to, then the WEP, etc.  I'd maybe first power down both devices (unplug).

Ted:

I tried your suggestion and the S3 does not find the wireless network.  I don't understand how this can be when the computer has excellent signal strength just a few feet away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ken

If it isn't recognizing the network make sure the router is broadcasting, as Rasta stated.

If the laptop is seeing it wireless, then the router is broadcasting. If it was me, I'd turn off the encryption and see if you can get them to connect that way first.  Debug a little at a time.

How do you check to detemine if the router is broadcasting.  I am wirelessly connected to the internet, through the router from my laptop downstairs near the S3.  If the router were not broadcasting how would I connect to the internet on the laptop?

Also, try setting a static IP address in SB3 (i.e don;t use DHCP from SB3)?

Not the best news:  I searched the slimserver forums.  Some users acknowledge Dlink router issues like yours.  I'll keep looking.

Another idea is to try WPA instead of WEP, but to second Bryan's idea, try turning off encryption first all togther.

Another Dlink owner said his issue was an old VPN client on his server was causing problems...unchecked it in properties and allw as well.  Dunno enough about this to even make sense.

Here's another Dlink Dir-655 story, with VPN as the eventual culprit

And another.  Good troubleshooting info here:

Did you reset to factory defaults before you tried to reprogram?  To do that you have to hold down the "add" key while you plug in the power cord.

I had the same problem today.  SB3 worked fine last night but this morning the display was dark and it would not connect. It had developed amnesia.  I tried all my tricks and then finally called tech support.

Logitech tech support was great.  No waiting and the person who helped me was very patient and really seemed to know what he was doing.  Still we could not figure out why the SB3 had gone wonky and it refused efforts to get it to connect in the wireless (Linksys) mode. It said it was connected to the wireless network but would not connect to Squeeze Network. The tecchie thought it really was not connected to the wireless network but the SB never allowed or asked me to enter my WEP keys.  In furstration he had me hook it up via ethernet and do the complete ethernet install.  That seemed to get the SB's attention.  After that I switched back to wireless and did a wireless install. It works fine now.

My suggestion----call tech support.  The toll free number is on the SB website.

Don:

Thank you so very much as the reset did the trick!  I am back in business!

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions.  I had read through Slim Forums and found nothing about resetting the S3.

A very Special Thank you!

Ken,  Resetting defaults is described in the troubleshooting section of the owners manual.  When all else fails, read the manual

You are very welcome.  I felt your pain.   Glad you are back in business. I know how that feels too.  :banana piano:
