My first attemp at OB
« on: 25 Feb 2008, 09:09 am »
Hello all you OB fanatics...this is my first real attemp at an OB speaker. These OB's are 24"w x 36" H and feature a 4.5" Fostex Fe126e and a Vintage 8" woofer from a pair of old Realistic Nova speakers. They are not crossed over yet,but they sound so good without one, I'm questioning if I should ever use one.My next attemp will be with a 15" or 18" woofer and a small full range driver.http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f382/elfaudio/mystereo016.jpg[/IMG]

Not to bad :-) Looking forward to read about your new project.

That is as elegant and as affordable of a solution if I have ever seen one.  How do you plan to cut the hole for the larger woofer?  I heard that it is a dog attempting to make larger holes from present, smaller ones. :thumb:

Thank's for the kind words...For my upcomming projects I will use new baffles and start from scratch...I'm thinking of offset mirror image fullrange drivers with  centered woofers for my next set of baffles.Jazz music sounds so sweet with these speakers. I'm also going to order some A-N Super 12's and mount them in some nice baffles, hopefully they dont need bass augmentation since they are 12" fullrangers.

Welcome to AC, welcome to the Open Baffle Circle, and nice job on your first run at it.

I was not aware that that Fostex driver was applicable for OB, but if your ears are telling you good things, it is working well!

When you say that there is no Xover, do you mean that both drivers are running full range?  In parallel I assume?

How did you make those baffles, what are they made of?

Thanks for sharing,

That's a pretty cool design. I like it. Especially the idea of matching the two drivers in such a way that you don't need a crossover. On the other hand, if you limit the low frequencies going to your full range driver, you may get better power handling and cleaner sound. I think simillar would apply to your woofer ( less distortion caused by HF if you send it only the LF material). I'm not sure if the magnitude of those benefits would outweigh the drawbacks associated with added complexity of a crossover.

I am thinking of something kind of similar but different. OBs using 12" calrad wideband driver with Alnico magnets ougmented with a tweeder or supertweeder. the XO would be a simple capacitor and an L pad so I can tweak the HF response.

Let us know how your project progresses.

Cheers,

Rafal

Actually the specs say the Fostex is not ideal for OB,but I used this driver alone in OB without any bass augmentaion and I really liked the sound...I generally let my ears be the judge of things. Both the drivers are running full range and are wired in parallel. The baffles are made from 3/4" Birch Ply with a hand rubbed oil finish.I made a stabilizer base out of Birch Ply that has adjustable spikes up front to give the speakers a slight tilt to aim the drivers at ear level. I finished them off with some custom logos and you have one nice looking speaker.

Before I made this speaker I was told that I needed a X-over,but I have always liked the sound of speakers who run the woofer full range with a cap on the tweeter.I wanted to employ the same idea with my speakers, but a cap isn't required because the Fostex is a full range driver capable of high frequency extension to 25khz and is not bothered by low frequency information so I say why add a x-over and mess up the seemlessness of the presentation.Distortion would be lower with a X-over at the expense of seemlessness which I rather have over lower distortion.I will definately keep you guys posted with my future projects.

Hi Audiophile36,

What kind of 15" woofers and small midranges are you using to build your next OB? I have a pair of Stephen Trusonic 12" woofers lying around. Are they good woofers to build OB? Sorry for the beginner's questions. Thanks.

Hello Tan,

For my next projects I will probably be using either a 12" or 15" woofer from Goldwood they are really inexspensive with the 12" at $15 each and the 15" at $18 each. They both have really high QTS specs...the 12" has QTS of 1.19 and the 15" has a QTS of 1.44 which will produce great bass in OB.I'm not familiar with Truesonic woofers, but if they have a QTS of atleast 0.50 they should be ok in OB. For the mids and highs I will be using a full range driver from Fostex or Tang Band.

Hi Audiophile36, Looks good and a bonus they are inexpensive.
I'm not trying to be alarming but always feel the responsibility to warn others of my experience with running small Fostex on OB without xo. I tore the voice coils on a FE108EZ that way. Knew it could happen but was enjoying the sound so much I turned it up too high .
Was using the Hawthorne Augies and trying different widerange drivers with them.
Just wanted to report in. I expect you aren't playing them too loud now, but that .35 xmax doesn't have any protection from over excursion on OB.
Anyway, have heard great things about the 126 and may try them sometime.

Thank's for the heads up...I never listen really loud and the type of music I listen too doesn't have "that" much low frequency energy. The 126e is a great litle driver and no tweeters are needed with them.
