Gone Wild
« on: 18 Dec 2007, 07:22 pm »
I recently posted that I bought a Rega Planar 3 with RB300 arm (no cart) off eBay, but was thinking about either doing all the good mods to it OR buying a better TT that I wouldn't need to mod much if at all.  All the Rega mods I had in mind would have cost more than the TT, so I kept my eye open and went nuts.  A Wilson Benesch Circle TT is on the way.   aa  It has an RB300 arm with Incognito re-wire mod and an Audio Technica OC9ML/II cartridge (supposedly only 100 hours on it).  It will be a while before it's in service, as now I need to get a phono preamp.  I'm considering building the pre that was in a recent issue of Audio Xpress magazine.   I'll need it to hook up to my good Acurus SS power amp and new tube amp, and I'll need the MC step-up circuitry to hook up to my HH Scott integrated tube amps.
I'm very impressed with the OC9 positive reviews listed by Needledoctor:

Sounds Like Review
"Sonically, I found the OC9 to be a pure delight. This is without doubt one of the cleanest- sounding phono cartridges I have ever had the pleasure of using and the OC9s significant achievement in this regard added greatly to my enjoyment of the music.

The truth is, you could easily spend twice the OC9s asking price and still not equal let alone surpass its level of musical involvement, accuracy, or purity.

In all, the Audio-Technica OC9 provides most of the performance characteristics of the best of the breed, but without the heroic price, and without having to worry whether the sample you buy is a good one."

Any suggested tweaks?  I do have an A-T vacuum platter.

Anyone interested in the Regar Planar 3/RB300?

shoot Hank - you're good  :thumb:

Just get it on some quality isolation and set up arm/tonearm geometry right and you're gonna' have some killer tune-age going on there  :hyper:

Tube amps naturally noisy (I have Bell integrateds fully re-done)...combined with step-up....you might one day prefer a 2.0mv or higher voltage cartridge.  But, try it as you have it...if it makes sweet music, that's all that matters.

Enjoy fully - John

Now, Now,

Pimp-dom has to be bestowed by one's peers, and IIRC you had many more than one solitary enthusiastic recomendation for the AT440 before being so honoured

That sounds quite a scoop, Hank. I look forward to reading how you find it.

John, yes I'll have to "see" what the noise level is with my new tube amp and vintage Scott's.  This is my first MC cart, but it does seem to have a fairly high output - .4mV as noted in this review:
http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/vinyl/messages/138043.html

Wayner, no pimp for me - I couldn't approach the stratospheric pimpdom level accorded to the DD Technics on this forum. :)

Thanks Jim, I am pumped about that super low distortion preamp circuit design in Audio Xpress - I think I'll buy the circuit board from the designer and build the thing - I'm a solder sling-er from way back.  Sniffing lead fumes for many years is my crazy behavior excuse :thumb:

John, speaking of isolation, I do recall reading in my WB research that this TT needs isolation, so I'm thinking of a granite slab approach.  Also, maybe replacing the felt mat with something better.

Hank,

I had a marble slab under mine for a while...then I got turned on to a thick block of maple and pointy brass toes pointed straight down into it from the TT.  It was a revelation....and not long ago that I found it.

I chronicled my adventure here...note the great comments from others experiences, too: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=42423.0

If you have an IKEA near you they sell birch cutting boards.....2 to 4 of them stacked on top of one another would likely offer isolation as good as or better than one thick maple block.  Won't bust your 'Boy Gone Wild' budget either  :thumb:

John, thanks for the link.  I've also been thinking about the butcherblock thing, but moreover, I want to try a constrained layer experiment, with maybe PE vinyl cabinet damping sheet on top of a granite slab and then wood slab as top layer and set the TT (maybe with spikes) on top of that.
Granite surface plates from Grizzly: http://grizzlytools.com/products/searchresults.aspx?q=granite

Surface plate stand might be a sturdy TT base:
